Europe@feddit.org•Facial recognition to be 'rolled out' across UK after human rights challenge failsEnglish
6·1 day agoOh, you’re an American.
Say what you will about the US. It’s far from perfect. But their legal model for human rights is more robust than many of their peer countries. The fact that free speech is constitutionally protected there is good thing and the fact that free speech is dependent on majority support is a weakness of the UK system; that is, after all, how the UK got themselves into this current situation.
(I’m not American btw, and I’m by no means a big fan of the US. But still, you have to give credit where credit is due.)

Showerthoughts@lemmy.world•How many times do you think an ant has killed a person?English
23·2 days agoIn a court of law, the most the ant could get for this is manslaughter. Very likely though he would get off with a mere wreckless endangerment charge

29·2 days agoThe split seems to have started with the Epstein files and It’s starting to grow. I’m curious to see how overt it will become. Will it simply result in lower republican voter turnout? Or will a high number of former allies in government start to turn on him?

18·2 days agoYeah things are really looking bleak over there. That plus their recent attacks on free speech (you can get arrested for supporting “Palestinian action”) paint a very dystopian picture for the future of the UK

3·6 days agoAre there any issues with having pet squirrels? Not that I’d want to adopt one for the sake of it, but if you have to rescue one like OP is there any issue with just adopting it as a pet?

43·6 days agoWhat are the odds that the EU would actually accept the UK as a potential member state again? I would assume that they’d just say sorry, missed your chance

If you read my original comment, you’ll notice that I said the US is far from perfect and I’m not a big fan. That said, it’s an incredibly unnuanced take to think that literally everything the US does is evil. They do at least some things right, even if you want to argue that, on balance, they suck. And one of the things that they do do right is their protections of free speech. This prevents a situation where you can arrest people for protesting in support of Palestine, as currently happens in the UK and Australia.
