I mean, unless you’re explicitly invited for dinner.
An entire meal? Pshhht. If you show up unannounced, you’re lucky if you get more than a glass of (excellent quality) tap water. If I like you, I might put the kettle on for some instant coffee.
If you show up unannounced, you’re lucky if I open the door.
True, my reply was of course assuming you have very good reason to invade my home and you come bearing gifts.
Instant coffee? So if you like people you punish them more than if you don’t?
It’s the only coffee I have. You want coffee, you take the instant. Be grateful I don’t use the microwave to heat it.
at least it’s coffee.
Not sure about that for Ireland. A cup of tea sure. But gtfo if you think you’re staying for food.

If you were coming 'round for a meal, sure, but otherwise I’d expect you to already have plans for what you’ll be eating that day.
The best I can do is a kringverjaardag where you get some snacks…
Kopje thee of kopje koffie. Een koekje erbij.
bitterballen?
I mean, it depends on where you draw the line for what a meal is.
In Sweden you’re all but guaranteed to be served a minimum of coffee and some form of sweet pastry/cookie (fika).
I don’t think I ever served anyone a meal. If you announce your visit, I’ll bake a cake. But other than that, nah.
I did once for my sister and my brother in law.
But they were on a trip and asked well before of they could stop by for some lunch. And the cooking part was just some boiled potatoes on my end.
Yeah sure, if you call in advance and ask “hey could we have some food”, then it’s no problem, but I would never cook something for guests if they’re not explicitly asking for it.
