Here in Germany the Bishop is called “Läufer”, which means “Runner” and actually makes even a bit more sense than the original war elephant.
In Ukraine the bishop is either called the elephant (returning to the original version) or the officer (I think that one was forced by russian empire, but also was used during Soviet era)
you think that’s impressive? they have towers that can race across entire fields in one move, the queen has flash’s powers, the lowliest soldiers can be promoted to the king’s wife.

A squad of horses can maneuvre through a field occupied by infantry, though rarely straight through. The bishops actually represent elephants and the rooks are chariots, both which can charge in long straight lines!
i see it as knight lances having to attack on an obligue, so their horses won’t ram into each other. and the lances giving them extra reach
In German, we call the lower image “Pfluft” and I think that’s beautiful. /j
Explanation for the non-Germans:
Horse in German is “Pferd”, so “Pf-Erd”.
“Erd” = “ground” in German.So naturally the second pic is “Pfluft”, or “Pf-Luft”, because
“Luft” = “air” in German.And people say we have no humor.
TBF, it typically is kinda cryptic (the “Pfluft” joke being a good example here)…
