In all my watching of DS9 I never clocked that I am older than Gabriel Bell. Come on Trek, you couldn’t make him born in the 70s? He still could have done right by those people and been old enough to see Alien in the theaters.
I hadn’t looked at the fine print on his date of birth. Fuck.
Also in the fineprint: Imagine you could do a planetary broadcast through a “data link” in 2024. Do they mean TikTok or Instagram?
The best thing… he had to go to something that looked like a phone-office, to rent a terminal, in 2024.

Which kind of makes sense. Like you can tell the difference between your dog and the neighbor’s dog but could you tell the difference between two ants or two shrimp or two slugs? Star Trek aliens are pretty much humanoid bipeds for budget reasons but irl you might have a really hard time telling the difference between members of another sentient species.
And a very business-minded response. Who cares what they look like, so long as they continue to eat, drink, gamble, and enjoy sex? Preferably via his establishment.
And finally - look-alikes are a thing. There’s a lot of old photos/paintings seemingly showing someone contemporary. It’s neat but doesn’t suggest anything deeper.

That’s to be expected.
This has given me yet another opportunity to post my fan-theory/head-canon regarding the “look” of the Founders–particularly the leader. Some say that the leader (the “Female Changeling” which I guess is all we get for a name for her) chose her “look” to resemble Odo, but my theory is that this look is the “default” form they use when dealing with humanoid solids because they once encountered the Progenitors and found them to be an inspiration. Which is why the Founders did things like evolve the Vorta and create the Jem’hadar. So they choose to look like a Progenitor when interacting with solids (it’s also a fun way to acknowledge that the same actress portrays both the Female Changeling and the Progenitor in the above image)
I like that take. Clearly, the Founders continued to make some malicious choices thereafter. The Progenitors merely impressed upon them a basic template for solid bipeds.
Solids are ironic
Is this why Sisko decided to reverse his hair and beard? Because he was sick of schoolchildren coming up to him and asking if he was the guy in their textbook?
I heard he stole that look from some historical documents labeled “Spencer for Hire”
