Yeah, it’s dangerous to simplify it in that way. I’m 100% certain Carney doesn’t see it as a single population, and I know Canadians don’t either (even if just because neither think of the impact these policies have on indigenous peoples or First Nations in the same way they do “Canadians”). Carney is also a dangerous neolib because he typically isn’t a politician, he’s an exceptionally achieved economist and his policies as Governor of the Bank of Canada during the '08 recession is often credited as the reason Canada’s economy faired better than others in the G7; even putting Canadian banks in a better position than US and European banks by '09.

This isn’t just a shill business-major who writes policy to benefit his cronies, this is a person who wholeheartedly subscribes to the philosophy that neoliberal politics and economics is the more secure route to societal wellbeing, and he has made a career of maintaining these systems even under severe conditions. Which means it’s important to recognize that he definitely understands the consequences of promoting fossil fuels despite their environmental impact and economic unsustainability, and his central role in the Taskforce for Scaling Voluntary Carbon Markets indicates that he also understood that this industry could be sustained by occluding its support with environmental rhetoric and policy-making; which is what the previous Liberal government did.

This is a guy who genuinely believes economic growth is the most crucial element in a secure society, which means he’s also the exact kind of person who can’t understand that the material limitations of reality requires harm to privileged classes in the Canada in order for this way of life to continue, even though it obviously should not continue due to those limitations. Using the narrative that he’s just “another dirty politician,” ignores the specificity of these conditions as well as the reasons why this system functions the way it does. That might be useful for blurbs online, but we can’t ignore that these reductive discourses also contributes to the continued political iliteracy of average Canadians who definitely wouldn’t respond well to the idea of giving up their luxuries for environmental sustainability.
