How were they supposed to know it was Russian? It was flying after all
The AA-crews wanted to make sure it was Russian, so they shot it down at which point it definetly was Russian, by virtue of not flying

You’d think in a war with the same aircraft being used on both sides that the belligerents would invest in some robust IFF.
That happened as well in the Solzhenitsyn book “1917” when the Russians were shooting at the Cossacks, and vice versa. They were both on the same side! I laughed like a loon when I read that, but I was a younger man back then.
It happened surprisingly often before widespread radio.
