Computer scientists are among the most libertarian there are and will never work together in that way. They genuinely believe that, in the face of decades of layoffs, that they can do better alone.
As a humanities graduate, I have to admit I feel a little schadenfreude. However, maybe we can work together to fix the economy now.
Seriously though what grads are looking at any prospects besides bullshit-slinging MBAs, MAYBE some kinds of lawyers?
This economy isn’t even hiring nurses and IT people anymore. That’s when you know things are insane.
What, is everyone supposed to just be a senior engineer or neurosurgeon as their first job now, because AI allgedly took every rung on the ladder below?
I’m a senior struggling to find a job next to me right now, I haven’t seen that before. I even had an interview where a recruiter told me that they were looking for “seniors with 3 years of experience.” They were literally looking for seniors out of school.
The job market is fucked for everyone and I don’t even know when it will be normal again, if ever. Or if I have to find another kind of job that is the opposite of what I have done for 20 years.
Did people expect coding to be a golden goose forever? We’re losing our shit over 7% unemployment in a field of regular 250k+ salaries?
Yes AI has made coding easier and will lower demand long term. We don’t need to lose our shit over this.
Regular salaries are nowhere near that high.
Tricky thing is that these LLMs aren’t very good systems designers, and that even for seemingly basic task someone needs to check if it’s doing what it is supposed to do. For complex systems, that requires senior developers.
But if you don’t hire junior devs anymore, who’s going to replace those seniors once they leave?
Psssh, that doesn’t sound like a problem for this quarter.
Dude from what I hear from college placement support guys is they have been seeing less middle tier job requests for alumni and the pay for early career has kind of stagnated for compsci one hr even told them selected candidates will get 2k in ai token budget though.
