I just calculated if you try catch up with all 1180 episodes today, then you need to watch for 12 hours per day without a single second of interruption for 38 days, to get to today’s most recent episode.
Sometimes it can be nice to have a consistent ongoing side project tbh. I started one piece when it had about 800 episodes, took ages but its far from a slog, killer story all the way through.
Did you take into account effective watch time? I would exclude intro and outro… also some animes spend 3-5 minutes repeating the last 3-5 minutes from last episode (almost verbatim, super cheap imo).
Edit: according to this source, it’s between 18 and 20 minutes of actual watch time. Not bad at all.

Wonder how much the One Pace series eliminates from the watch time? Lmfao I watch it when I need to catch up and it honestly helps a lot.
Last time I checked (about a year ago) it’s ~40% of the original run time.
For anyone not already aware, One Pace is a fan profect to re-edit the series to reduce runtime like overly long shots, repeating animations, and recaps. It also condenses 3-6 episodes into one hour super episodes to reduce how often the intro/outro credits run because they also take up a lot of time
There was one anime where an episode ends with the protagonist barely winning a very bloody fight. I made a snap judgment “He’s probably going to need to spend an episode recovering from his injuries, so I’ll just skip one.”
I think I got it dead on and it honestly didn’t seem like I missed much. But I have no idea what that guidance should be for One Piece.

Or read an divide that by at least 5 (chapters are 15 pages adapted individually into 25 minute episodes, the anime’s a pretty terrible adaptation for that reason)
I saw an example recently of a segment that seemed to last like 3-5 minutes in the anime, but was 4 panels in the manga. I don’t even think it was the full page. Is the anime really that bad at pacing?

naruto, bleach, one piece has been going on since the early 2000s, i assume most seasons are just fillers or slop. because animes from japan usually have an end.
Until the last decade or so, anime based on manga would run mostly weekly while trying not to overtake their source material. If the anime got too close to where the manga was, they’d do filler arcs/episodes or just stretch the material out.
On some occasions, the anime would just do something completely different from the manga. Fullmetal Alchemist is a good example. The first anime more or less matched the manga until around the Laboratory Five arc. At that point, the anime went in a completely different direction so it wouldn’t have to go on hiatus or do filler.
Naruto may be the exception because both series actually have an ending. Boruto was shit, however.
At least One Piece looks close to finishing. I’m also waiting on Case Closed and I can see that one going for another 10 years…

Conan I don’t even think has a goal anymore. Like it started with wanting to reverse the poison, but how often is that even addressed these days? It’s just a fun way to tell crime stories now.
If I remember correctly the author even stated that they had no intent on ever finishing the story and wants to keep it alive/going for as long as possible.
If you have not started, I’d recommend waiting for “the one piece”, a remake of the anime that will be much shorter, it will probably be a much more reasonable commitment to see it. It should start airing in february 2027.
AFAIK it’s going to be at the same-ish pace as the live action version
That’s my plan also. I wish they did that with all shounen, streamlined, no fillers, consistent animation. I’d pay for a Naruto like that.

I love it, but the length is certainly a hurdle. It took me years to get through the anime, and there were several points where it felt like it took multiple episodes to make even the most minor progress in the story. Still, though, the story itself is great, and it seems that recently things are back to the snappy pace that the beginning of the show used to have, at least where the dub leaves off.
I’ve recently been using one pace to watch the anime. I found that is cuts a lot of “shocked face” shots that last a unnecessarily long time and a few others
I have to give it a go. I tried to start watching over piece years (decade?) ago, back when Ace was to be executed. I started from the beginning and it was a snore fest. Decided I’ll just skip the start and watch episodes as they come out. After spending what felt like an eternity watching Luffy run on ice I just gave up on the entire series because it felt like an episode worth of story was stretched to 5 episodes.

IMO w8 a little longer and watch “the one piece”, it’s a project that will do a “remake” of the series without the filler and with the seal of approval by the creator, made by WIT syudios

Dunno since I’ve never seen Naruto. But, it cuts down the episode lengths and a few filler episodes so I think so?

I had a friend who I saw catching up on the anime in 2023, he texted me a few months ago to say he had reached the newest episode.
I caught up FAR to fast. I was working from home. A new job, and it was right around the holidays. So no one wanted to really train me for awhile, so they gave me easy work that took no time at all. I don’t think I’ve ever binged something so hard in my life haha
Didn’t they get the One Piece and just find out it’s actually just one piece (1/8th) of the real McGuffin they thought they were looking for?
At that rate, we’ll have the full 8/8 “Whole” in around 2230. Even the cut back version would be 1000 episodea.

Don’t even want to know how far behind I am nowThat was near the start of Dressrosa, which was a pretty long arc with a lot of fight episodes that seemed to just be the same back and forth stalemate over and over again. It’s unfortunately just a few arcs before the Wano arc that does the same thing to an even greater extent, unfortunately. The filler was already starting to wear on me by that point, but those 2 arcs took it to an extreme. Luckily, it seems that the creator has realized this as well, and the arc after Wano is a nice quick pace with plenty of stuff going on.
Good to know. I do remember dropping it because it felt like I could watch 10 episodes and nothing happened. And sometimes I would just scrub through an episode to see if it’s still the same fight and pretty much just skip it.
When they weren’t fighting for 20 episodes at a time it was a fun show, but ehh idk if I’ll ever get back into it
Yeah, that definitely became the creator’s favorite way to stretch things out. The Wano arc had one big fight toward the end that went on for around 80 episodes… There were several different people fighting in different locations, but it was still way too long. I haven’t seen the “One Pace” edit that someone else brought up in this thread, but it sounds like it cut out a lot of that unnecessary filler.

i was following one piece up until 2013 manga only. started watching the anime couple years ago and still hasnt catched up until now
I’m guessing there’s good jumping on and off points for these types of shows. Like, if you don’t want to watch 1000 episodes, start on episode X and watch till episode Y to get a good complete(ish) story.
Definitely. The “seasons” of the show are setup as story arcs.
