Bazooka gum came out in 1947, named after a WW-II era RPG, itself named after a brass instrument, itself named after 1910s slang for a boastful person, itself named for a medieval trumpet. The actor referenced was this guy, who appeared in over 160 movies, mostly westerns.
From the early 1950s, but excluding most of the 2010’s, the gum included comics featuring Bazooka Joe. If you collected and sent in enough comics, the company would send you a cheap toy, like a small cardboard telescope, secret decoder ring, some erector set parts, or similar. Over 1500 different strips were printed.

The brand still exists, though sold to a different corporate owner in 2022.
The gum itself is absolutely godawful.
I remember it being kinda weird. Also I’m not sure if they were sitting around since the 50s and that’s why
I was just about to argue, it’s not that bad! Then realized I was thinking of double bubble. I know I’ve had bazooka as a kid in the 90s but I have no memory of what it tasted like.
Think that’s bad, my grandfather used to chew old pine sap straight from the trees as gum, he was an old time country boy. I thought I’d give it a try, worst shit I’ve experienced since black jack gum.
I’ve heard of that 🤢 no thanks. Sap is not tasty.
The gum itself is absolutely godawful.
OP ain’t wrong. it was worse than the gum that came in baseball cards - lumps of barely flavored bubblegum hard as fucking rock. the taste lasted for about 12 seconds.
hard as fucking rock. … taste lasted for about 12 seconds.
That was my impression too.
I’m willing to consider that maybe I’ve only ever encountered very stale pieces, which could’ve left a bad impression. But if so, that happened every time I tried it.
perhaps! maybe it was all manufactured during ww2 and we ate surplus bubblegum for 40 years lol
