The jury deliberated a little over two hours before reaching its verdict. A judge and a different jury had reached the same conclusion about Palin’s defamation claims in 2022, but her lawsuit was revived by an appeals court.

Palin was subdued as she left the courthouse and made her way to a waiting car, telling reporters: “I get to go home to a beautiful family of five kids and grandkids and a beautiful property and get on with life. And that’s nice.”

Later, she posted on the social platform X that she planned to “keep asking the press to quit making things up.”

The saga of Sarah Palin is a perfect example why you should NEVER, EVER, as a ‘normal’ politician, associate yourself with fascist/populist politicians.

She’s terrible, but more normal than McCain.

The main thing is that she would have avoided national scrutiny and pushes for ethics investigations, if she just stayed in Alaska. She was the first woman and the youngest governor of Alaska and early on she had around 90% popularity among voters there.

Then she saw dollar signs and hitched her ride to the far right, and has been laughed out of Alaskan elections ever since, and ended up doing Fox shows and failing to sue the press for defamation.

If… she has lost this, and then starts saying ‘the NYT lied about me’…

… can’t they then sue her for defamation, libel?

Pretty sure you have to prove actual damages. The town drunk going off on one of their typical rants that won’t convince anyone wouldn’t be considered defamatory.

At least she has a nice view of Russia from her backyard to enjoy while recovering from this defeat.

IIRC a Russian tank breaks down near enough to her house that they go to her for “help”, standard pornography ensues.

Did Sarah Palin Say: ‘I Can See Russia from My House’?

2008 GOP vice presidential candidate Sarah Palin did not say ‘I can see Russia from my house.’ That line originated with an SNL spoof.

The basis for the line was Governor Palin’s 11 September 2008 appearance on ABC News, her first major interview after being tapped as the vice-presidential nominee. During that appearance, interviewer Charles Gibson asked her what insight she had gained from living so close to Russia, and she responded: “They’re our next-door neighbors, and you can actually see Russia from land here in Alaska, from an island in Alaska”:

Big Diomede Island on the right is part of Russia.

Little Diomede Island on the left is part of the United States.

It’s almost impossible for a public figure to win a defamation case. If you ever hear of that happening, pay attention, because it probably means the defendant was an absolute shit bag.

Cardi B won a defamation case a while back. That one is a pretty good example.

Her lawsuit stemmed from an editorial about gun control published after U.S. Rep. Steve Scalise, a Louisiana Republican, was wounded in 2017 when a man with a history of anti-GOP activity opened fire on a Congressional baseball team practice in Washington.

In the editorial, the Times wrote that before the 2011 mass shooting in Arizona that severely wounded former U.S. Rep. Gabby Giffords and killed six others, Palin’s political action committee had contributed to an atmosphere of violence by circulating a map of electoral districts that put Giffords and 19 other Democrats under stylized crosshairs.

The Times corrected the article less than 14 hours after it was published, saying it had “incorrectly stated that a link existed between political rhetoric and the 2011 shooting” and that it had “incorrectly described” the map.
