Grinch was the scientist, but the character commonly called “The Grinch” is really Grinch’s monster, created by Grinch.
Or maybe he’s like the Hulk and turns back into a regular Who when he’s in a better mood?
Is that why he’s naked? His regular clothes are too small when he grinches out?
This theory is making more and more sense. Which also implies there’s no Who Tony Stark to make him the uber-stretchy pants.

It’s his name. You can see in the school flash back, when he’s still part of civilised society, that his nameplate says Grinch.
But interestingly the book of Who says the term “Grinchy” should apply when Christmas spirit is in short supply.
And we’re given the impression the book of who is an old foundational text. So it would appear the old ladies named him after the term Grinchy. So they’re really just assholes.
So the ladies just named him the equivalent or Boaty McBoatface, but for his attitude. Lol. Grand-Karens.

Codsworth recognizes Assface as a proper name, but that was in 2077 so maybe we just haven’t gotten there yet, culturally.

Since Theodor Seuss Geisel was publishing new material until shortly before his death in 1991, that’s probably canon, if that term could apply here.

IMO it seems like he’s been forced to live atop Mt Crumpet due to Who-gentrification or more disturbingly because of an ethnic Grinch cleansing
