As I have posted my in first post, here, >>>>>The one-problem with ‘Star Trek’ it is supposed to be exploring space & not interfering with other planets’ beings’ development, but it still has a lot of violence-wars.<<<<<. Let alone the rest of Space SciFi entertainment,
My idea solves that by instead of creating my Better Space, SciFi, Exploration Entertainment on military atmosphere & the experiences in any war(s)- I have no experience in,…
…but to base it upon, what have no experience with, the true scientists of all fields-explorers-peace makers-maintainers (& people needed for them to live, like those of their family that agree to go with them, but none of them have spouses-children of any kind-educators-doctors <including those for mental health>), exploring the unknown-not known enough places of the outer space, with only truly defense weapons. Think of the diplomates, ambassadors & UN, but not dominated by 5-1st World countries/more Socialist & true all countries’ opinions-votes matters, no military atmosphere all, only defensive weapons & in outer space.
Their spaceships have the best possible forcefields, but if need be the forcefields can use the force put into the weapons absorbed by their forcefields back at the attacking spaceships, not to damage, but to make their weapons no longer functional & push the spaceships out of reach of their own spaceships, for as long as needed for their spaceships to escape, the attacking spaceships.
You have some good replies here, but I’ll add one piece. You’ve imagined a world where your primary characters are Good. No killing, just defensive armaments, all about diplomacy and exploration.
Consider, though, that interesting stories have conflict. Conflict needs to have consequences to the characters you’re following, or it’s not very interesting.
You’re describing a world that would probably be better to live in than that of Star Trek. But I’m not sure it would result in better stories.
There more things than just violence & wars to create problems over, Thank you, for that input, but I have already thought through pages (comic books)-chapters (books-graphic novels)-episodes (TV)-movies.
You’ve got the vaguest beginning of an outline of a setting. If you want it to be great entertainment, you’ve got to give it a story and characters. You’ve got to figure out what it is really about, what makes it thought provoking. It takes a lot of work to create all of that. You can’t just hand off this initial description to the world and act like other people are going to pick it up for you. Don’t tell me it’s better than Star Trek, show me.
I know, I was not trying that detailed, Plus, just thought it through as I typing-out the post. I am working on another story,
I really like the idea, and I am happy to to stumble over this follow up thread. So my questions are not intended as nitpicking or malevolence. Just questions I would have, when reading about the story. Which could also lead to episodes by themselves.
- Any kind of defensive system could be used as a weapon; By accident, or by a splinter group of people (or politicians/power hungry). I believe there lays a nice philosophical question for a space lawyer/judge.
- Did they buy into the prime directive? Wouldn’t the use a lot of drones or cloaking devices to net ever be discovered, because they might become a target of more violent races, which like to take advantage of them or their tech? (Could be about a story about a century long space blockade of their planet. Which is maybe what they used as a bait or Honeypot, while being somewhere else already.
- Trading technology is it a big yes or big no? A story about the problems of trading with more dystopian planets. Cheers
Thank you, man! I really appreciate the thoughts,
What I am going to say here, for all readers & repliers, 1st. Thank You, 2nd. When created the post starting this all, I was expecting a degree, holding back from saying a lot, of dislike. After all this extremely popular Space SciFi entertainment product, that already has it’s own universe that I am criticizing & looking to improve upon, but also create something not just yes, better, but different (which is my personality, hate easy copying what is already). I really have yet experience that, thank you, again.
Back to you this awesome replier, super thought-out (no shares of profits, LOL), 8263ksbr,
1st. & 3rd. Like those ideas, but I should not comment any farther.
&
2nd. Not completely understand, could try explain differently/rephrase, so my missing it would stop?
Yeah sorry about #2. Some was lost in autocorrect.
Here rephrased: 2. Did they actually buy into the Prime Directive? Exploring without interference? If they did, wouldn’t they mostly rely on drones or cloaking tech so they’d never be discovered in the first place, if they go where no man has gone before? Otherwise, they’d just paint a target on their backs for more violent species looking to take advantage of them or their technology. Like “Look, there is species #73647 (i don’t want to name your civilization), they have super technology but won’t strike back, we just take what we want, no counter attacks!” That could even lead to a story about a century-long space blockade of their home planet: The attacker try to hunger them out. Because their shields are impenetrable. But maybe the planet is a facsimile, an empty place to lure malevolent species away from the true home planet.
I would definitely read a sci-fi book about a civilization which dedicates itself to complete peacefulness. I believe there is a lot of conflict and story waiting to be unpacked.
Yes, better than ‘Star Trek’ series pretend to care about, With 1st. superior negotiators for avoiding attacks-wars, 2nd. superior shields/forcefields, 3rd. ability to make attackers’ weapons useless & 4th. push back attackers’ spaceships for great distances, to continue on. Then other species would be fools wasting their resources trying to beat them.
If it exists in their spaceships, their own planet(s) would obviously have it.
That is awesome, do start working on it!
Better is subjective. What you describe could well be one of the factions in the Star Trek universe. You are telling a story from a slightly different perspective – an even more nonviolent one.
A good question to answer may be: What will make your story engaging to us all, in an age where so many stories have been told in so many ways?
WOW!!! Thank You, for such positive response & encouragement.
What do mean by better is subjective?
‘Star Trek’ universe is just violent & wars, for what I described to fit into it. Completely nonviolent, when you think of the fact that main Beings are non-violent, negotiators, & their ships would only have defensive weapons that can never directly harm attackers.
You really think the idea I summarized has been done before? I have never been a huge reader & read even less than I did as an HS student, but I never read-watch any entertainment comes close to what I have summarized. I no offense/harmful weapons anywhere, even on their hips, unlike both legendary Space SciFi entertainments.
Consider this scary thought, while I always think better of the middle-poor classes of people than most, has our world & our world’s entertainment become so violent-wars that there would not be a big enough audience for it?
Perhaps I have imagined it too, then, for it feels very familiar. Do go on, I am willing to be your editor, when time etc. permits. Engage! ;)
With all due respect, How good with English language are you? Not your fault, I have proven Learning Challenges that make English language & writing hard & truthfully makes me nerves about writing stories. Like I have said I am already in the most important story, I could ever write, for everything on this planet. I am also going to make all my stories interconnected, like TV spinoffs & movies beyond trilogies/3 & 6 (i do not what the correct terms are for them).
You comment writing is a bit rambling, probably a fast and motivated brain – good! Make sure you keep an eye on tone and pace.
