        the gas would likely be irradiated too. I heard of an early proposal to detonate nukes deep underground in the tar sands to bring the oil to the top, theoretically it would work but radioactive oil.

    I’ve stopped asking if people are this stupid, because yes, they are.

    But, I think this is more about sowing fear, than a serious suggestion.

    I keep trying to persuade myself, in spite of clear evidence to the contrary, that people are not this stupid. But, it doesn’t work.

      Oh man… I hate to blow your bubble, but that guy is just repeating something that was under serious consideration about 50 years ago.

      He probably just remembers the proposals, and not the problems people found in it.

    It’s not. This has been proposed multiple times throughout history. The U.S. program, named Project Plowshare, was active from the late 1950s to the 1970s and explored various peaceful applications for nuclear explosives. It was built on ideas from older, British and German plans. The Russians also had their own plans. This is not a new idea.
