There are a lot of people who destroy their bodies and shorten their lives for less than a multi-million dollar paycheck. I don’t blame the players, I blame the system that leads them to this end. A poor kid who is good at football can pull their entire family out of poverty by taking a few blows to the head. It’s not an individual’s fault for choosing that.
The problem is that it’s easier to be a brain-damaged, ex-player millionaire than a brilliant scientist millionaire. This country shits on intelligence and worships entertainment
Define easier… Being a brilliant scientist (or engineer) will get you comfortably a mid-6-figure job in and research lab. That will make you a millionaire in about a decade if you are responsible with your savings, and there’s tens of thousands of those in the world, maybe hundreds.
Folks who point at football players as proof of what we value miss the mark entirely, you and I have more in common with the football player when it comes to percentage of value they generate vs receive.
Brain damage: it’s what children crave!
They may crave brain damage, but what they yearn for is the mines and you know it.
Gridiron football is NOT a child’s game, unsafe for them.
Same could be said for adults. We’ve created incentives for people to hurt themselves purely for entertainment. It’s pretty barbaric.
And they make a pittance relative to their output while the owners institute socialism for themselves, it’s a microcosm of economic woes.

Tajfel developed this theory when in his research he discovered it didn’t take very much for humans to organize themselves into groups, and once they did, they immediately began to act like assholes to people who were in groups that they were not. Tajfel’s experiments showed that humans can enter into us-versus-them thinking in seconds, and they will do so over just about anything.

Unfortunately this is a nation made largely of spectators. They don’t do anything. They watch to live vicariously and make their whole identities celebrating the accomplishments of sportsballers, actors, and lately politicians 🤮.
I disagree. Morons need a healthy and safe outlet for their tribalism. When they don’t get it, they instead indulge in culture war and politics as a way to go ugga bugga me vs you. Look around at how that plays out. I’d rather have drunk footballers and fistfights than the literal end of the world.
