And with them putting old Reddit behind a login, they’re just losing traffic.
They’re going to start getting really desperate to mine data and drive advertising dollars soon.

The wave has started. I just moved from there to here, after they enforced ID checks and require email or phone number.

Fediverse needs that. There’s just not enough people to attain the one cool thing about reddit, that was having a couple people create communities around basically any niche hobby you could think of.

Only very generic topics or ultra-popular stuff get some traction, and in many cases it’s barely a blip.

A problem I’ve seen also is creating a niche community because you don’t want to just get the general content, but since there’s simple fewer users it’s just dead. And when someone else thinks about switching to Lemmy, they see a bunch of dead communities and are like “oh this site is dead.”

It’s annoying but on a newer site(/federation of sites) those niche communities need to be conversations that start in a more generalized community that enough people want to branch it off into it’s own thing. So there’s already core users, so it’s not DOA.

they just try to pretend like facebook, Fake engagement by significant amount of bots, which are likely going to be propaganda anyways. Also thier purges last year, probably was the final blow anyways, get rid of actual users, in favor of fake botting, propaganda, and spammers.

Is it regional or for VPN users or something? I still use old reddit when I need to from search results, and I don’t get asked to log in.

It seems to be rolling out region by region I reckon. I’m in the south east Asia and I don’t get asked to log in yet.
