Agreed; I always let my cat smell things that I’m holding/working on because they clearly are interested in what their human is doing. That way he can get a better idea of what’s going on and feel like he’s helping.

We’ve had as many as 5 cats at once. We had one that did the same thing, without the judgement, he just wanted a sniff, he didn’t really want it. OTOH, My Mama Bear always wanted a single bite of whatever meat I was eating, just to know that I still loved her.

There are 2 cats inside of my home:
- One of them smells and then steals my food
- The other one smells and then looks disgusted at my food
I have the same 2 cats!

I have to add that the disgusted one for the first time in her life actually accepted an offering of a nice slice of ham a few days ago, so she might be changing her opinion slightly.
I let my Willow sniff-test a lot of my food. usually I know he wouldn’t find interest in it, but I did lose a few shrimp to him one time
Tried giving a small cooked shrimp to a cat I once had. Proceeded to bat it all over the room. He liked the smell and to fetch it but wouldn’t eat it.
My sister’s cat is the exact same way. They dub it the sniff tax.
I had a dog that I tricked into eating a tomato once. He wasn’t pleased, but after that he stopped begging. He would come up and ask to smell and see my food. If he wanted something he would let me know and I would get him some. If he didn’t he just moved along, disappointed, but we had an understanding.
We tried that with pickles, but it turns out they’re like crack to the little fucker.
My sister’s dog loved tomatoes. I was picking cherry potatoes in my dad’s garden and would toss them to the dog. He gobbled them up.
We were picking cranberries in a bog and our dogs were eating them, they wouldn’t touch them if you offered but they picked their own.
My dog was asking once when I was eating grapefruit, so I put half down for him, he sniffed it and gave me a dirty look then fucked off.
I have to be careful with burgers because my garbage cat rescue will actively try and steal them after sniff inspecting.
