My ADHD to my anxiety: “hold my beer”
THIS PART RIGHT HERE.
My flight is at 7, so i should be at the gate by 6 to be safe, and the line for security tends to be long, give it another two hours just in case, and I should give extra time in case something holds me up at check-in, so maybe be there by 3, and man traffic is going to be terrible, so i should leave the house at 1…
Then it takes 45 minutes to get through the entire airport and I have 5 hours to kill. Better than being late though, right?
The last time I flew I had two flight options of something like 7:30am & 8:50am. I chose the latter because why give myself the additional stress of the early flight, right?
I was so early for my 8:50 flight I watched the 7:30 board in disbelief with myself 🤦
To be fair, if that’s the case, you would’ve been there in time to watch the 6:10 flight if you’d chose the 7:30 originally.
I let my girlfriend do the planing once.
Once.
We left the house too late. We could not take the tram to the train station, because on Sundays they were driving at different times as she knew. We had to call the taxi. Only to almost miss the train. No seats reserved, so I had to stand for almost two hours (she found a seat). We almost came too late to the airport, something that would have happened even without all the stress before.
I let my girlfriend do the planing once.
That sounds just like my ex. I remember our last flight together.
Flight takes off at 14:00? No problem, it takes 30 minutes to get to the airport and we have to check our bags in at least 45 minutes in advance, plus “undefined overhead”, so we’ll leave at 12:15.
What then happened is 12:00 hits. Nothing is planned in advance, so we call around to get a cab. Oh, none are available for 25 minutes? Shit. Cab shows up at 12:30. Late but still good. We arrive at the airport at 13:00, thankfully without traffic. We wait in line twenty minutes to check our baggage, five minutes late but they still take it. We hit security at 13:30, but luckily the line moves fairly quickly and we get through at 13:45. We run to our gate while the airline calls for us over the PA system, arriving at 13:55, just before they close the doors. We only made it because the flight was slightly delayed.
She couldn’t understand why this wasn’t good for me. We still made it, right? Yep. And that’s one of the many reasons she’s my ex.
I get to airports 1-2 hours ahead of time. Sometimes, three hours. My wife likes to get there exactly on time.
Well, everything backfired. We couldn’t figure out how parking works TSA line has a malfunction so lines were going even slower. Then she had to get her bag rescanned by TSA.
We missed our flight by 2 minutes, and sat there in the airport for six hours for the next flight.
Now all of a sudden, she thinks it’s a good idea we get to the airport 1-2 hours ahead of time.
I am not willing to go that far. Missing a plane would cause me a cardiac arrest or a stroke or both.
We made this arrangement: She can decide everything when we get to a place. I decide how we reach that place.
This way she can do her beloved planning for holidays and trips while I don’t stress myself into an early grave.
You made it. So calm down.
Ah, I see your girlfriend plans like me! I don’t have a partner to offload the planning to, so that’s how I feel on every trip I make, lol. On my last trip I went to the wrong airport! (I still made my flight after taking an Uber to the correct airport, somehow.)
When I was the most anxious in my life, I developed a great strategy for being on time. See, if I were to have an appointment, I’d Google maps it. If it’s 22 mins away I am calling that 30 mins. So if my appt is at 2, I should leave at 130. But, if there’s traffic, or no easy parking or something… gotta pad it. Alarm set for 1:22.
Ok so a sane person knows I’m gonna be like 15 mins early.
So I arrive 20 mins early. Okay perfect. Set a timer for 9 minutes. Walk. In any direction. Until the timer goes off. Then abruptly turn around. Arrive gracefully about 1 minutes early.
As a non anxious person who recently missed a flight, thanks for this. This is my guide for 2026.
I just carry a book on me so when I get somewhere early I have a chance to do some reading
Even sitting in the plane (or more often the train), I keep wondering if it’s the right one.
I’m frequently numb to crowds as I lose focus. Maybe it’s a neurodivergent thing or something.
And I have on occasions found myself on the wrong bus. Fortunately, my city is pretty spaghetti with overlapping buse routes.
Um, yes we do. I probably won’t miss many if any again but I missed two already and have always had loads of anxiety.
Yep. I had anxiety to leave a meeting (normally only 30mins long) early and it dragged on for two hours. Finally I excused myself and sprinted out of the building. The bus had just missed the flight.
Missed my high school best friend’s wedding, and that’s a friendship scar that hasn’t fully healed
Spending so much time checking if you packed everything, you depart too late for the airport? It’s something my wife does. A few near misses because of that.
For me it was just inexperience. Missed a domestic flight by 2 minutes and an international one because I thought an hour early should be enough but the Rome airport sucks and it was not. Now I usually get there way too early. But having anxiety didn’t stop me from making somewhat the same mistake twice!
Too true. I have worried about missing a hundred or more. I’ve missed zero.
HA
Fuck this. It’s everything from plane flights to doctor’s appointments to freaking showing up an hour early for work. Goddamnit.
Or we stop flying and also don’t miss flights.
Unfortunately, I have to fly because I have friends and family who live in a worse hellhole than I do and it’s the only way I can see them and check up on them.
Me, at the gate 2 hours ahead of boarding:
“Miss” as in “don’t feel nostalgic over missing them” or as in “never skip them”?
Jesus people on Lemmy are stupid.
If you genuinely believe that I don’t actually know and didn’t pretend not to for a shitty joke, then yeah, I’d have to agree that “Jesus people on Lemmy are stupid”
