Recent scare stories obscure the fact that the risk posed by artificial intelligence is most likely to come from its misuse by the powerful
Yeah, AI is/will be a master manipulator, it has infinite patience, it can easily introduce slight biases into it’s responses and way too many people trust it either out of apathy or stupidity.
This means that it can slowly but surely push whatever agenda it’s masters want.
People won’t notice at first, but their views will slowly change in an accelerated curve, in a similar way to how normal social media can radicalize people, so will AI, just less overtly.
I think it’ll be even simpler than that: it will turn people lazy, dumb, uneducated, and willing to believe anything they see or hear.
And it won’t take long: the current generation of kids cheating their way out of what’s left of the education system will soon reach voting age.
What do you mean “it will turn”? We’re there already, that’s how we got here in the first place, we don’t need AI for that.

Filter for thirst level!Yes, and the AI threat is also worse than everything mentioned in this article. The quote from the researcher at the very start is apt and should be taken 100% seriously.

No shit, Sherlock. People who paid attention understood this from the first news reports about LLMs
It’s not wrong, but 2024 should have made it ABUNDANTLY clear that most people, at least in the US, are thick, ignorant morons who are ABSOLUTELY incapable of identifying, or even recognizing politically dangerous power grabs even when they are slapped directly in the face with them.
Job loss is just one of the issues, but it’s the ONLY one that MIGHT pierce their thick, cavernous skulls.
I’m sorry, I didn’t mean for my other response to read like it does!
Every time I hear someone mourn the loss of menial fast food jobs and shit to AI, my brain looses another 5000 cells. Missing the point. You are missing the whole fucking point. I’d rather you be pro-AI so I could just tell you to fuck off and think no more of it.
AI isn’t getting rid of the menial jobs, is the thing. It’s just intensifying the exploitation of workers.
Burger King has an AI that will watch you and discipline you if you don’t smile. That’s what AI means for fastfood workers.
Guess this is coming to pass:
Seemed like a pretty well reasoned comment to me. Nowhere in there did they talk about the loss of menial jobs specifically.
Omg I just realized how my comment comes off. I was saying “you” as in “hypothetical person who thinks this way” fuck
I’m trying to agree with that comment, while adding that yeah, its often the only thing that gets through their skulls, and it ticks me off too. There are so many other (and frankly more important) reasons that “generative” AI is horrible.
Don’t worry… I understood what you meant.
Oh there’s artificial intelligence now? That’s neat. I thought we were stuck with chat bots.
LLMs we’re just the sales pitch.
Why did they take all the research money and hardware from everything else, then?
‘Artificial intelligence’ has been around for quite a while. The headlines were grabbed by LLMs, but that’s not the only place that the investment money has gone. None of these major companies with public facing LLMs are exclusively working with them.
Llm’s are not ai. Llm’s get in the way of real ai research, as they do all other thought.
Personally, I think that’s kind of a matter of opinion. AI is a pretty broad term.
If you include the thing that im playing against when i run a computer opponent in ‘starcraft: brood war’, or the thing included in my keyboard app to help me type tgis, sure. Yes. It’s ai.
It is not in any meaningful sense intelligence or a convincing simulation thereof.
That’s fine, I’ll agree to disagree. Out of curiosity, what do you consider real AI to be?
Something that has any of what i consider intelligence constructed artificially.
ai can be bad in multiple ways.
The biggest issue I read from this is the same issue that was quite obv in the last GFC, in that business face no consequences for breaking morality and similar laws. If a company got caught, they got a small fine, but profit still covered that.
So what’s the incentive for ai not to use blackmail or to act immorally?
This is a specific choice if it legal systems.
People have already lost control. AI will just eliminate the need for the middle upper class and the influencers and idols and the illusion of freedom.
Who is willing to look at their current dire situation? On top of that, global justice would mean having to fight for getting less.
It’s a beautiful trap. Everything is out in the open with no need to hide it.
