Owner was getting burnt out and tried to spread out the work by bringing on extra admins, but it turned out to still be too much. Ended up shutting the server down as they couldn’t resolve the issues they were having. Thankfully they provided ample warning, so most communities on the instance have found other homes.
I’m not a very tech savvy person, so forgive me if this is a dumb question. But does that mean that each instance of Lemmy is personally paid for by whoever owns it? How can that be sustainable?
It isn’t sustainable at scale and the devs have stated that they don’t see it as an issue since they don’t want a single instance getting too big.
Yes
I’m not an instance owner for Lemmy but a lot of us enjoy hosting different services at home on old/recycled hardware as a hobby or a means to escape big tech.
I personally run a few things like Plex (media), PiHole (adblock), and NextCloud (“cloud” storage).
It’s sustainable as the Fediverse is a decentralized platform, meaning that, if necessary, we can rebuild accounts on a different instance if something happens to our existing one.
Because most instances don’t have that many users and the admins probably have all this infrastructure in place already for other purposes and dedicate some of it to their instance.
Guess I didn’t get the memo!
Server shut down. I think it was financial related but I didn’t look into it too much
Admins couldn’t keep up with the work load.
