My old AOL name and email (and still my screen name in a couple places still used) came from 12 year old kid me thinking a concept car looked cool as hell back in like 1995. Even had a school folder with a picture of one on it.

So there I was, as a kid in chatrooms and such, with the screen name… Prowler350.

40’s me still thinks the Plymouth Prowler looks cool as hell.

I still have my old web.de address but I only use it for spammy stuff and recently web.de keeps nagging me because I never log into the web view so they can’t make money off of me.

I guess I could give it up, since right now my old Gmail address (one of the first ones) has morphed to serve this purpose and my “good” address is ponting directly at my own domain and server.

      Literally me.

My absolute favorite use of the web.de address 12 year old me created was when my sister dragged me to a bank to make an account. She’d get a bonus for bringing a new customer and I’d get my first own account.

The bank employee didn’t expect to meet the Klitcommander that day and when she realized it she had a hard time containing her happiness. You better believe I spelled it out letter by letter.

I did manage to slough off my early teenage email addresses. It’s the gmail account I made in college I can’t get rid of, I think it’d be easier to get a new SSN.

Mine got hacked many years ago and it spammed every single contact with porn…

It was crazy how people were so mad at me as if I had sent it deliberately

Using the corporate emails is foolhardy. You will be periodically locked out until you link your phone to your account. If you lose your phone, you lose access to your email, the moment you need your email more than any.

This is unacceptable, even without considering how they steal our information.

Is this the kind of thing you thought about at 12 years old, signing up for your first personal email account?

The issue is that there can be a huge amount of friction to changing your email address when you’ve been using it for a long time.

That, and most people don’t give a shit about their privacy.

Yeah I’ve changed my main email a few times, and had a few issues years later trying to get to an account I no longer had the email for. Ended up having to buy the domain after someone was sitting on it to be able to recreate an old email and get access.

Using a password manager now makes it a lot easier to keep track of stuff though being able to search logins

I have a domain I’ve owned for 25 years that I created as a teen and use for my personal website and email. Fortunately it is pretty meaningless and not embarrassing!
