It used to be beans.
If someone could also explain why half the post titles have the word “rule” in them, that would also be helpful
Disclosure: I don’t know the full lore and I’m only answering because nobody else has.
My vague understanding is that this is unique to the ‘196’ community which has a community rule that every post must include the word “rule” in the title post. So it’s super common to see because it’s an active community. Beyond that I don’t really understand what the community is about as it seems to have a random variety of posts.
corn, beans and squash are known as the three sisters
history will say they were roommates.
about the beans: look for top all time
After the wave of newcomers lowered lemmy started to have some “weekly” phases where other memes became the meta like the german pedalo or moths and many others. But as a moth fren i bring some moth memes back from time to time :)
Don’t forget about no pooping!
My fav
Hexbear has been Beanis posting for a long time now. I don’t know how it started, but it’s a significant part of that instance’s content at this point
ASK THE MOTH. THE MOTH WILL TELL ALL!
I was sick of seeing political stuff on the shitposting group so I started bombarding it with corn until it stopped. I had happened to have a bunch of corn pictures saved on my phone because I had flooded my friend’s discord with corn pictures just to goof on her.
It spiraled into a glorious corn filled nightmare insanity, and as someone from Ohio, I appreciate that.
I think the beans came up later because people like to play with themes.
thank you for this well-done psyop. we really need more non-political memes.
here, have a picture of the Three Sisters as a reward:

No? The beans came before the corn…

I think it’s fair to call me an elder lemming at this point, as I recall the reasons for both. I signed up on .world with my first account on the last day before the infamous APIocalypse.
Along with myself, a lot of us were putting effort into posting good stuff, upvoting, and generally having a lot of positive interactions. Someone on !lemmyshitpost@lemmy.world posted a picture with a can of beans with a caption along the lines of “I hear that lemmy will upvote anything. Here’s a picture of beans”. It quickly became the most upvoted post of all time.
As lemmy culture developed into a deeply political space, it began flooding !lemmyshitpost@lemmy.world with American politics. People got sick of it, and people started doing “we’re posting x now until politics stops”. There had been a couple rounds of various themes, and then someone announced “that’s it, I’m sick of politics everywhere. We’re posting corn”. Cornposting has become the default political purge over there.
seems like political shit ended up fertilizing good crops, then. :)
(btw i fully support breaking political content on non-political communities because it deters new users to the fediverse and also because it’s hella annoying, itchy even)
to call me an elder lemming at this point,
Looks at profile age: 1 years 4 months.
Me (2 years 7 months): Huh, guess I’ll just take my prehistoric ass out of here and go chip flints.
I guess I’m from before time (3y).
We’re old like dirt.
Or beans. Old like beans.
well, they said their first account was on .world, and the one you checked the age of is on blahaj. so, an age discrepancy is to be expected.
Ah, clearly age has affected my ability to read and comprehend. Thanks for correcting me.
Goes back to flint knapping
Wait, there was a time before every post and comment chain became political? Sounds magical.
I joined when everyone was competing about holding their poop in as much as possible
Do you happen to know who won?
the promising one told there would be signs in case of failiure
The moths freaked me out a bit. I bet that’s the next one
I miss the moths
Maybe we should start posting lamps
I was cracking up at the moths
Thanks for the explanation! I didn’t use to check Lemmy frequently up until recently, so the cornposting has always been this strange thing i saw sometimes, but never understood it. Now it makes sense
We also did it with vans for some reason. So throw that in your history notes.
I remember a small jeans era as well
Sometimes the beans were in jeans.
Cornposting
I heard cornyposting was pretty popular
Corn is out. Squash is the it thing now!

stupid sexy squash

It’s like wearing nothing at all!
Butternut.
Lol!
Lemmy just loves bean corny

Two of the pinned memes on slrpnk memes tells you exactly why we all love corn and beans!
have you never beheld a sweet, buttered cob
Is holding such a cob the path to enlightenment? If so, then I shall find one and hold it dearly
We are simple farmers around here, the common clay of the internet.
Ya know,
MoronsShitposters.
Where all the white corn at?
