American here. It genuinely pains me to see what little goodwill we had left in the world be squandered by the Turd Reich. Seeing your neighbors vote this totalitarian wannabe in a second time, embrace the hateful propaganda fed to them, as everything becomes unaffordable and AI datacenters, Flock cameras, and prison camps filled with innocent immigrants litter the landscape . So many of us are fighting back however we can. Those of us using legal means see the rules quickly changed to thwart us. Those using less legal means are vindictively prosecuted while pedophiles in power are left in peace. I don’t fault the rest of the world for turning their backs on us - it’s justified.

Please know that the regular people here still love our neighbors to the north and don’t want the longstanding friendship between our countries to die. We don’t want to annex Canada (nor Greenland). We’re sorry and are desperately trying to fight against this cancer that’s killing our country.

Unfortunately, the fact still remains that Carney has basically abandoned every environmentalist initiatives to inject money in the economy because of this trade war. Every country on heart os now inveting way more in military. There’s a huge cost to all of this, millions will die of consequences of the Trump era.

In a way, as a Canadian, I’m glad for Trump for two reasons. One, we hated him so much that the conservative candidate in our federal election lost what should have been the easiest conservative win of my lifetime because he threw in support behind trump. And two, we are finally diversifying our economy away from that volatile ass country.

gotta say i agree, and while I realize Carney is just another 2008 conservative, at the very least he is competent.

that being said, do you think we are headed for an orange official opp considering PP’s dwindling popularity and Lewis’ growing popularity (considering the orange who kept their seats were partcularly progressive)?

I doubt the people are ready for another orange wave, at least until Avi Lewis gets the local activist networks going again. On that note I encourage people to actually join the NDP and help get things rolling. Membership is very affordable (depends on region, was <$20 for me) and they will put every dollar and minute you’re willing to give to use.

Personally I wouldn’t bet on the next election. Grassroots power takes a lot longer to build, but it’s much more resilient in the long run. If you’re joining the NDP get ready to play the long game.

We learned in Trump 1.0 that he is extremely isolationist and wants to cut the US off from the world like it’s North Korea.

The way an abusive spouse cuts their partner off from all other social contacts.

The way FOX News encourages its viewership to stop watching all other media sources so they’re in an information silo.

And the US voted for him again, because we vote based on vibes and bigotry. Because we have forgotten our civic duty to vote responsibly. Because we are suckers for lying confidence men who make ridiculous promises.

So the US is due for more than a bit of harsh finding out. We should have learned after George W. Bush. We didn’t and FA’d. (Effed A?)

Anyhow a lot of Americans have cut off their MAGA relatives and neighbors. It is no surprise at all that Canada — and the entire international community — might do the same.

I’m skeptical the US is going to survive to the November election, much less the new Congress in January.

Also the US voting system disenfranchises minorites disproportionately and uses the electoral college, which is anti-democratic (i.e., non swing state district votes affect nothing)… So it’s not simply a matter of shitty voter choices. Those happened in coordination with other shit.

The reality is most people just dont care where a service originates from, as long as its good. You wouldn’t think it based on the internet, but most people arent on the internet to make points about things.

That’s part (the lesser part, but still important) of why I hate when news orgs use an angry dude on twitter as their example of someone who is up in arms about something.

The Internet is not representative of the population. The people posting are self selected. It’s the same reason if you go looking for coffee advice you’ll find a thousand posts with advice about roasting your own beans while most people are drinking Starbucks, Dunkin, Folgers, and Maxwell House.

The great majority of people do not give a shit what the Internet is doing. A lot of people look but only a teeny tiny slice are posting about it.

I only use Facebook for my business. Mostly just social posts about things which act as promotion. That said, I’m not seeing the results I saw a few years ago. Far fewer interactions on posts, almost no comments. I’m not sure it’s worth doing these days. We get more client contacts from our webpage than via facebook. We’re doing a ton more business these days than a few years ago, so I know it’s not coming from Facebook.

We have a business instagram account as well, but I use a third party to post to facebook/insta and it commonly has an issue posting to instagram. I have personal facebook and insta accounts but I never use them (expect to log into the business accounts). As a user, I can’t stand either of those platforms.

I don’t subscribe to any streaming service. Haven’t for over 3-4 years.

I do use youtube. I also have a business and a personal youtube account that are monitized so I throw videos up a few times a month.

I only use Amazon for my business and even then orders are rare. I try to order from Canadian vendors when possible.

I actually do hate linux as a desktop. It doesn’t suit my computer needs outside of maybe just browsing the web. I use Windows in my music studio and for video editing and I’m very happy with the software I’m using. I’m also extremely comfortable with it.

When I was in IT I used Linux all the time for servers though and had no complaints there.

I only like original Star Trek. I hated TNG and all the off-shoot shows.

I think he’s trying to encourage the premiers to allow US brands back onto the store shelves.

If that were enough to make a deal, it wouldn’t be awful. I think a lot of Canadians wouldn’t buy the liquor if it was back on store shelves, so it might not change much.

It could be a good negotiating tactic, because the Americans might think that it meant that the revenue for US alcohol companies might start flowing again, when in reality it just puts it directly in the hands of Canadian buyers, rather than in the hands of the Premiers.

What’s more annoying to me is that Carney is going to go with counter-tariffs. That just means that if Canadians choose to buy American products they have to pay more. And, since the US is so monstrously huge, in many cases there aren’t alternatives to American products.

What I think they should be doing instead is investigating American companies for antitrust, allowing Canadians to circumvent DRM to do things like install alternative app stores to deprive Apple / Google of revenue, allow Canadians to work around printer ink restrictions to use any ink they want, allow Canadian farmers to repair their own tractors without John Deere’s approval, etc.

Instead of raising Canadians’ costs, deprive American companies of the unfair IP rules that they use to make massive profits. Those rules were forced on Canada in exchange for the US agreeing to barrier-free access to the American market for Canada. If the US is withdrawing from their own trade deals, then Canada shouldn’t feel obliged to uphold its obligations under those deals either.

That was always a bargaining chip. It wasn’t super significant from an economic standpoint, but it’s an easy thing to remove liquor from the shelves, just a decision by Premiers. Liquor producers have way more influence in the US relative to the actual economic impact. That makes a very good bargaining chip. Don’t know why you’d be upset over Carney wanting to use that bargaining chip.

It’s a moot point now, pretty sure US booze isn’t going back on the shelves anytime soon after the collapse of trade talks.

My best guess for what happened where some of the details leaked Friday were palatable, and Provinces removing bans, while (as Manitoba) said “please don’t buy any of their shit”, was Provinces technically okaying the deal, as long as there were loopholes like bad prices.

Nope. Americans are used to having wars on the other side of an ocean. Those are wars you can be oblivious of. When drones are buzzing overhead and you see smoke rising from the strategic targets in your city, you can’t drive to work because the bridge was taken down and there’s military checkpoints everywhere asking to see your papers to prove you aren’t Canadian? I think Americans will notice that.
