Fun fact: The first Nvidia chip, the NV1, used quadrilaterals for primitives rather than triangles because it was based on and somewhat compatible with the Sega Saturn. However around the same time MS announced that DirectX would exclusively support triangle primitives and the rest was history.
Today I learned quads was ever used and not something 3D modelers smoked up.
