I have previously come across a white appearing woman with a white appearing husband and a mixed race black appearing baby. The woman used this to argue that the reason their baby is half black is because she had a black great grandparent. The husband accepted this logic.

Skin color is polygenic, meaning it is influenced by many genes rather than one or two. As of now, dozens of genes are established as influencing skin color.
If both parents each only have a few of these genes contributing to dark skin and the majority of them contributing to light skin, both parents will have fairly light skin. If their child then inherits exactly those genes that contribute to dark skin, it is plausible that it has darker skin than either parent.
Which is possible. So are other reasons. If I was him I’d have a test done, just so he can prove to his friends who ask if it’s true. Because of course it’s true, why would she lie, right?
It’s funny but it works. I was able to figure out the percentage chance of outliers quickly without any additional thought beyond the visuals.
