The real cuck energy is never actually playing the games and just watching streamers

There are a lot of good new games out there too, they’re all indie games though. Some of them are built for retro consoles too haha. The NES dev scene is really active

If AAA gaming collapses for a couple years and investment money goes to smaller devs making games with less focus on obscenely detailed graphics and more focus on engaging gameplay and stories, I would be sooooo happy.

I stick to indie games because my computer can’t handle anything else. On average they’re more fun and have a lot more novelty to the compared to the lowest common denominator AAA games.

The one silver lining from the RAM “crisis” is that more games will be made to use lower resources.

It’s just like old music. People have been making music since the dawn of time, and the ratio of good to shit music was relatively constant. The only thing is, shit music tends to be forgotten over time, whereas the greats still survive.

People that are into old music, regardless of the period, are almost by definition listening to a curated bunch of greatest hits. Ditto for retro gaming: the by-the-numbers, derivative or unplayable crap is long forgotten.

I have to disagree. The amount of high quality games has never been higher, and there is something for every kind of player available. And i can remember a ton of absolutely awful games from the 90s and 00s.

AAA studios having enshittified doesn’t mean that you have to go retro to find a great game.

I stick mostly to retro games and indie games, these days. The AAA space doesn’t hold a lot of appeal to me these days, but I have played so many great recent indie games, and games from smaller development studios.

Revisionism. Releasing questionable quality because the moneypeople were pushing for it has always happened in the past. People who remember are just less likely to scream online about it.

There’s also a healthy dose of survivorship bias. The truly terrible games have faded into obscurity back when I got my first Amiga I played “Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade” for a few weeks, because that was one of the two pack in games. Guess how many times I have revisited that steaming pile of Tiertex shit since then?

I’m glad someone mentioned survivorship bias. I used to do a fun little “True Random” roulette with some rom packs I had (basically every game ever made prior to PS2) and a vast majority were pretty awful. The challenge we had was to play at least 30 minutes, but that was so rough sometimes.

It’s tough though, I have played a few games I used to love back in the day over the last few years that are not what I remember at all. Can’t help but feel like my struggle is with going back to a gameplay style that’s evolved far past the games that are locked in time. I beat Dune 2 with all 3 factions as a teenager, struggled to play it for an hour last year. It’s hard to go back to one of the grand daddies of the RTS genre when you have gotten used to modern interfaces, controls, and features.

I recently bought an N64 and started browsing the Internet with Links via an Apple IIe. Strongly recommend ditching the modern World.

N64 is an interesting choice for this topic. I love N64 games for the nostalgia, but I think the early 3D generation has aged worse than most video game generations.

I’ve been playing dk64 on the switch emulator recently, and partially agree. The gameplay has been really fun, but the camera controls are a bit rage inducing. There was 1 mini game I had to do like 20 times to beat, due to the horrible semi fixed camera.

Yeah. I can deal with graphics of any fidelity but the camera and controls of the early 3D era were rough.

It’s a very good collectathon but I had more fun doing it alongside RetroAchevements. One advantage was the comments on the specific mini games helped because there was sometimes a trick to it (one was literally unplayable on my version, you had to abuse pause to win).
