It’s a disgrace what capitalism has done to dating apps.

Used to be you could put in a lot of free text, and search for whatever you wanted. Get the unadulerated list sorted by match percent.

Now it’s all opaque algorithm bullshit. Fuck 'em. These executives have blood and misery on their hands.

    Minor rant incoming:

these dating apps are some of the most privacy hungry surveillance-capitalism honeypots out there. Not only is their entire business model predicated on keeping people on the app and hopeful the app will work, they’re commodifying human connection and playing a notable part in the erosion of traditional 3rd spaces.

To top it all off they have very aggressive and opaque automated bans that will ban you for posting a photo they don’t think you’re in, or for having an additional account or many other minor things (as well as plenty of harassment prevention measures that are totally understandable) but the problem is once you’re banned they will not tell you why so that people can’t reverse engineer ban criteria to skirt around it. But if you reach out to support for help all they will tell you is “I cannot tell you or help you until you send me your government id so I can verify your identity”. Like I already debased myself and submitted to the face scan they require in order to have a profile (so they can compare it to your photos and ban you if their automated facial recognition deems they don’t look enough like you), now I have to give them even more of my information to sell in order to get support for my account to resolve an issue purposefully caused by their automod, ridiculous.

TL;DR: surveillance capitalism creating problems to which the solution is to surrender more of your privacy for their shareholder value.

Not directed at you OP, just screaming into the void

Online dating provides opportunities for many people who would otherwise find it difficult to find sex and romance. Surveillance isn’t the reason it was hard to find a partner in a small town, or as a gay person, or as someone with a disability.

It’s easy to forget the positives.

Ew, someone who stuffs peoples windshields full of ads and runs around with PervGlasses to feed their AI, while causing every NGO they visit to lose their data to the digital nirvana is not a good partner at all!

Sounds like they’re masking their unhinged borderline personality disorder in public. I mean, you do you, but sounds stressful for both of you…

Wish the apps would have ever shown me people with those sorts of thoughts. It was only ever for some reason conservative coded folks, you know… big truck guys with fish pictures who were “apolitical” and often super muscular(all the opposite of my preference) no matter how many times I swiped the other way. That was years ago tho, it doesn’t seem like it has been better for people.
