I broke the speed limit on my bicycle. I mean yeah, the speed limit was 15, and the motor on my bike tops out at 20, and I had to go looking for a speed limit lower than 25, and I wasn’t pedaling, and the speedometer on my bike said 17.4mph. damn breaking the speed limit on your bike feels really good. I really accomplished something today.

Those food delivery couriers often use nodded ebikes here. For anything beyond 25km/h one needs registration, insurance, driving licence, number plate, helmet, etc. here. Guess what, they have none of it. But they are racing through the pedestrian zone like that.
I already downloaded the manual to reprogram my ebike but I’m a chicken and trying to get more mileage so I’m trying to force the governor to go slower and e=mv2 more battery out of it but the damn changes won’t commit
depending on what you have, your best bet may be an aftermarket controller.
good thing about electrics is that mileage depends almost conpletely on how fast you are going, unlike ice that will see efficiency drops as you trick it out.
yeah, i’ve got other things that are more important right now. like installing mint. and getting turn signals. but i appreciate the direction for when i can get to it.

anyways my bike is a fun little terratrike i had a class 2 electric motor we slapped on since i’m on so many drugs i probably shouldn’t be operating a car.
I live at the bottom of a steep hill. Those road bikers will get up to at least 50mph and it’s a 35 zone. They race down as fast as they can in their spandex, turn around, ride back up the hill going about 3mph (creating a line of traffic), and do it all over again. And again and again.
man uses hill for exercise, local car brains upset.
Ok but the road is for both bicycles AND cars. These people are breaking the speed limit but that’s not ok for cars? If a car was going up a hill at 5mph, the line of traffic behind them would be irate. Note that the bicyclists regularly run the stop sign halfway down the hill. If bicyclists want to be treated like cars, they should act like it.
This is why bike paths should be as numerous as roads, and just like cars and trains should be separate, never the twain should meet, as should bicycle paths and roads. My city in the US has good bike paths, and I opt for those over the bike lanes almost every day.
i mean, kinda? my city has a couple really good bike paths and most of its roads that have wide rightmost lanes for bikes to ride in and cars can pass safely. I drive across town in 15 minutes. I can bike across town in 20, and that’s taking time to stop for kittens i see on the ride and see if they will come and get scritches. Because how can you see a cute outdoor kitten and not stop and see if it will come up to you for pets and forehead kisses (damn you pavlov). 30 years ago it was not friendly to bicyclists at all and i think the solution was one or two of the city council or the secret town council of elders becoming lycra dudes.
Unless your city only has a couple roads, you need to remove some roads and make them into bicycle and pedestrian thoroughfares. Cars control way too much of our cities, and non drivers have to subsidize both cars and suburbs.
nah, our city isn’t facing the problems where we need to do that. yet. we have a few “downtown” streets we’ve done that on (entirely through the quarantine, just weekends now for the farmer’s market that has grown so large the big park downtown can no longer contain it, which makes me very proud of my town).
most everyone who commutes here, they are commuting far longer than a bicycle can take them and we have been fighting to get regional public transit system connected (that is a billion dollar project though, bigger than my pull which is “hey get this dude some food”)
The car is 2 tons of protective steel. The man on the bicycle is made out of flesh and bones and a little bit of aluminium scaffolding pole, maybe some carbon fiber. One of these is commutiing and not paying attention. The other is engaged in exercise and controlled risk (controlled risk in the same way some people opt to ride motorcycles). I do not begrudge someone working their body in a public space.
They have exactly the same right to be crawling up the hill at 3mph as I do in a crawler gear driving a truck up hill. We’re both holding up traffic, but you don’t get upset at me because my goods vehicle would crush your passenger car like a bug. Why the contradiction?
If you can’t see the difference in potential energy (and potential probability for a fatal outcome) then you’re just as lost.

All I said is that all vehicles on the road are supposed to abide by the same traffic laws. The kamikazes on bikes break the law just as often (sometimes more so) than cars. I wish there was a bike lane there but there isn’t.

My wife has forbidden ne to break the speed limit when she saw I did 54kmph. I miss the good old times when I was younger
I was cautioned by police when I was a teenager for hitting 81kph on a 60km/h road in the suburbs on my mountain bike.
I’ve also done the motorcycle escort role for a national cycle race and on a steep downhill section those lads were pushing 110km/h easy.
This is the kind of thing that highlights the difference between a normal childhood and what the kids where I grew up had. I don’t know the fastest that we ever went on a bicycle but you can get some pretty good speed going straight down from a hilltop mine. No motors or anything, just a good solid huffy mountain bike and you can max out a bicycle speedometer quick.
OP needing an e-bike just to hit 17mph… Fuck, man. I can pretty easily hit 20-22mph on flat ground on my commuter bike … and it’s not even a fancy road racing bike or anything, just a steel-tube cruiser from the 90’s.
My bike weighs like 100 pounds. It’s a cargo bike. Also just a steel tube, but a bigger one.
I’m not going to mess with anyone for not being able to hit a certain speed or anything like that. OP says that the limitation is the type of bike they use but even if it wasn’t there’s plenty of reasons that someone may not have the same physicality as someone else that has nothing to do with who they are as a person.
I wasn’t intending to mess with OP when I posted my reply either. We were a bunch dumbass kids flying down a very steep dirt road with no safety gear more than an hour from the nearest hospital. Looking back on my childhood and some of the ridiculous things that we did I’m surprised that we didn’t have worse than a few broken bones.
There’s a straight downhill section through a 40km/h zone in the city on my morning commute where it’s quite easy to get up to 50.
Fastest I ever went on my high-racer recumbent was 98.1km/h many years ago on a long, straight downhill section of highway on Sunshine Coast. Sooo close to hitting the tonne.

I don’t even know. After that ride I saw that number and kind of freaked out a bit. I remember a car right next to me going the same speed. I realized that if I had fallen, I could have easily died. I’ve been a lot more careful of my downhill speed since then.
The ground feels so much closer at that speed outside of a cat, it’s so crazy

I once broke the limit going home from the train station. The limit was 60 (still don’t know why it’s that low, on a straight road outside town like that 90 is the norm) and I went aboit 70 according to my tachometer. Almost hit a fucking fox as well.

I broke 62 mph once, been over 55 a dozen or so times. Not that thrilling anymore, but it used to be
i’ve got a recumbent trike (there’s two kinds, delta which are the kind we all grew up with (two wheels in back), and tadpole has two wheels in front and is cool looking. i got the cool looking one). they drop us close enough our knuckles can scrape the ground, which makes our speeds feel much faster than they actually are.
that’s not why i bought it, but it’s a fun bonus. right now 25-30mph (40-50kph) (20mph with my motor) is fast enough and where i’m traveling currently has enough bike lanes, trails, or 25mph roads to get me where i need to get. that right there, i’m incredibly lucky.
