People with those types of weird wingdings, dingbats, dinguses, doohickeys, and thingamabobs crowding their keychains always puzzle me.
Why not have proper, normal things one would use as key chains? Like:
- A length of 7 links of cobalt kiln recovery chain you found on the floor of an industrial site.
- The pin of a fire extinguisher.
- A 7gb usb flash drive in the shape of a key that used to contain an encyclopedia but that now contains a Linux boot.
- A heavy-duty rigging hook.
Straps keys to the belt loop on jeans
I AM THE KEY CHAIN NOW
guy. this is rediculous. girl. well lets see your keys. guy pulls out massive pile of mini multitools.
A real charming young lady
meanwhile, I have like 3 keys. Car key, two front door keys.
Why do some people do this? Like my keys are just the keys and a worn to shit batman styled multi tool, it started black and is now grey with black accents.
I don’t have a ton of stuff on my keys, but I do have a cute little rabbit from a Day of the Dead restaurant I went to on vacation. I love the little bunny because when my keys fall into the depths of my biggest purse, I can just reach in, feel for the stuffy squish, and pull.
My keys consist of house, mailbox, bike chain, rabbit stuffy, TMNT Lego, and 3 library cards. My car key fob is on a separate ring with a long lanyard to find easily.
I have loads of keychains because my little sister gets them for me. She’s my fave person, so I can’t not put them on my keys lol

you put your keys inside your pocket
she puts her keys inside the bag of holding. increasing volume reduces chances of it getting lost in this bottomless pit
it’s just fun.
I have 2 flat things connected to my keys that are flat, so they aren’t bulky in my pocket, but they make them easier to grab.
My wife says so she can find them in her purse. I put a quick release on her actual keys for this exact situation. I can unhook all of her junk and just have her keys.
You would be shocked how fast objects get lost in even a small handbag… So many panic attacks thinking ive lost keys
I put a S-biner on my Jeep key for the summer because my wife liked to drive it with the top & doors off & girl clothes don’t have reap pockets. She proceeded to take the key off of the quick release and attach it via the split ring to her car keys, airpod case, and little clutch purse so she wouldn’t lose it.
I explained that she could just unclip the key & she said “I did, but I still had to hook it to my stuff.” When I explained that it unhooks from both sides, leaving the key on the clip so she could have just clipped it on, that was “too hard” and I was “being complicated”.
i locked my keys in my car 4 times in a year and i learned that the bigger and noisier my keys are, the harder it is for me to forget them
My keys are on a stretchy thingy that attaches to a hook in my purse. Which usually hangs in front of my butt. So we say my ass unlocks doors because most of my keys are fobs. My wife has said to me in this last week “[YMCA] get over here I need your ass to unlock this” unironically. To which I responded “here just take my ass and unlock it yourself” and I handed her my purse, we have fun.
One of the best things I ever bought was this bad boy.

I 3D printed something like this and love it. Made my 8 or so keys + fob super slim.
Damn, I almost wish I had more keys just to justify this.
Honestly, it takes as little as like, 2 keys and you can load it with those little tags from supermarkets and such. Eventually I’ll put my library card tag in there.

Here’s what my set looks like. Some 6 years post purchase.

You have to change all your locks to have only one type of keys though.
No, it’s pretty obviously just rods going through the “eye” of the keys, any kind with holes (which are the vast majority) should work. They’re obviously gonna use the same kind of keys in the product photos but that doesn’t mean its a forced thing. If it was a forced thing they’d not sell at all and wouldn’t have come to the position of being mentioned here.
It only works with basic keys. Anything that isn’t slender and flat with teeth on one side juste won’t fit. Maybe all keys are like that in the US, but it’s certainly not true elsewhere.
I think they try to make these things so you can just put in your normal keys, so they work with the different key profiles.
I’ve got house keys, storage unit keys and padlock keys on that bad boy. I drilled out a post office key to make it big enough for the screw once.
Omg FIRE
My muscle memory of knowing exactly how to move the keys to get the key I need and which keys I need to cycle through to find the one I need would be soo thrown off from this. Is it as handy as it looks that it’d be worth the trouble of relearning?
Absolutely, the feel for where your keys are is almost immediate. Especially because your keys have a weighted end with addition of car keys. You’ll figure it out quick.
I had the same one, and my biggest complaint was that the screws would come undone in my pocket.
But the second biggest complaint was that keys on opposite sides could sometimes get stuck together.
I got rid of it and replaced it with a belt clip carabineer one and it’s great. It also doubles as a belt end holder if your belt doesn’t have one.
You could probably use some removable threadlocker to prevent the first problem, though not sure how to fix the second one.
I did. It still managed to wiggle out, probably from the heat in my pocket. I was actually impressed
That’s actually very impressive
Oh wow, yeah that’s kind of impressive.
I liked having mines, having a mostly used key on the far end made the handle work as leverage. Had to get rid of it when my new flat used the thick old style keys though
I do not understand this but maybe it’s because I’m a guy and keep my keys in my front pocket. I keep literally the BARE MINIMUM of things on my key chain. So far as I even have separate keychains for separate vehicles instead of having one key chain for all of them. My SO on the other had has 2lbs of trinkets on her keychain.
Is it possible she’s a medieval dungeon master?

Opposite goals. If it’s in your pocket it needs to be minimal size. If it’s deep in your purse, it needs to be easy to grab.
Makes complete sense. Well said
And if it’s on a carabiner on your belt loop, you want a middle ground which is a situation in which large hair ties really shine. Added bonus, you’re likely the sort who needs one regularly and likes being able to offer one to people who need one.
Doesn’t it make a lot of noise walking around with your keys constantly hanging on your belt? I would also be scared that someone stealing them while on the train or something.
Have you ever walked past a janitor or security person and heard their keys rattling? I don’t think I have, and they typically have a lot of keys. Unless they’re bumping into something, they should all swing as a single unit. It shouldn’t really be an issue.
Not really, unless you have a lot of keys. They just kinda swing together. And pickpockets are rare in my country, so the fact that they’re in front of me where my hand naturally rests leaves me feeling secure in them
Seems like the purse is going to have an ever escalating competition for being big enough to grab.
I don’t have Seperate Keychains for each vehicle, I have all of my vehicle keys on quick releases, so I can just clip on the vehicle key I want to drive. It’s great. I do sacrifice minimalism a bit for some practicality in other ways, but yeah, I try to keep it light.
- My house key.
- Parent’s house key.
- Current vehicle key.
- Minimal flashdrive with Ventoy on it.
- Different minimal flash drive for normal files stuff.
- USB C to A adapter so I can use the flashdrive with my phone/steamdeck/etc. I keep this on the end of a flash drive.
- Google FindMy Tracker because I am the type to misplace my keys.
- Smallest bottle opener I could find.
- Telescopic pen, mainly for geocaching, as I’ve forgetten a pen way too many times.
- Sofirn SC01 mini flashlight. They don’t seem to sell this anymore unfortunately. It’s a super tiny stainless steel (so it matches my pen and flashdrives) 10180 powered flashlight that’s actually pretty bright.
Sounds like a lot of crap, but it ends up looking like this, which isn’t too bad, considering all of the utility it has.
My place has a lock with an key fob. I cloned it to a sticker snd put it on my license. I can leave with my car key, license, and CC and be good.
You should get an S carabiner for the flash drives so you don’t have to plug your keys into your computer.

That would add some bulk, and I don’t really have issues with plugging my keys into a computer. Frankly, I don’t use the flashdrives that often, but when I need them, they’re lifesavers.
Word. They work for me, figured I’d share.
The Ventoy stick i have is a Lexar 128GB one that has both A and C on it. Highly recommend as thats then one less thing to carry.
I really love the form factor of the sticks I carry, the solid one piece of metal with no moving parts. The dual ones always have a swivel, though that lexar one does look nice.
The USB C adapter just goes on the end of one of the sticks so it doesn’t really add another thing to carry.
The Ventoy thing reminds me of my minimalist setup:
- My car keyfob.
- My apartment key (on an extra keyring so it dangles lower to use immediately when I grab the whole set by the keyfob).
- My mailbox key.
- My work key.
- Minimal 256 GB flash drive partitioned into 100 GB for Ventoy and 150 GB for random personal files. This is my favorite minimalist shape for flash drives by far.
I have done geocaching and I’ve got a Steam Deck, so I may be borrowing the pen and adapter ideas, though I’ll probably keep the adapter with the Deck.
I should definitely combine my flashdrives into one… But I haven’t gotten around to that I suppose. The form factor of these is awesome, I’ve been using them for over 10 years, my first one was a USB-2 variant.
I might steal the idea of putting my house key on a lower ring, I currently find it by feeling the teeth as they’re newer and sharper than my parent’s house key lol.
Where’s your chatelaine?
Had to look that up. I’m happy keeping my keys in my pocket.
Oh, but there are so many other cool gadgets you can hook to it! A capsule full of sewing needles, a seam ripper, a small pair of scissors, maybe even a soft measuring tape. You could be a portable tailor!
Sounds like you need a purse for that
What. Did you look at the photo? My keys are probably still smaller than average.
I changed the locks on my house to one with a keypad so I only have to carry a car key.
Same. I keep my car and house keys separate so I can leave my house keys in the car and just carry the car key in my pocket. My house keys are just the remote and key to get into my house, nothing else.
My wife has all the other keys in her handbag, including all the spare keys because she can’t find the main set in bag, so she takes the spares as well. Sometimes she also takes mine because she can’t find the main set or the spare set in her bag (or wherever she placed them).
My girlfriend has pepper spray on hers in addition to about 15 keys, a huge key fob, and she also collects keychains.
They don’t fit in any of my pockets.
I never put keys in my pocket anyways. They go on a clip that hooks to my belt clip or pants.
Dad?
Yes son?
I did that for years. Then I realized I was “that guy” who always jingled and jangled while walking around. I have converted to the pocket and I don’t think I can go back now.
You got keys, they jingle jangle jingle (JINGLE JANGLE)
No one cares, and very few notice. I still walk quiet enough that I startle people.
Yeah this is me lol.
Labubu where
That’s what my key ring looks like :3
I have 2 keys.
Don’t hold out on us, show us a picture! Let us judge your tchotchkes!
Careful, DO NOT share photos of keys with the teeth visible. It’s possible to duplicate keys from a photo.
Depends on your threat model of course, if you’re just a guy (or gal) with no enemies or online fame/infamy, you probably don’t need to worry about things like that. Just be aware of the possibility.
Yeah, show us the tchotchkes, not the keys themselves.
It’s just 2 keys after all, should be easy to hide
I’ll do mines after I emigrate.
It's a big dox issue.
folks know who I am by them when I go to cons&tourneys
I like this except for there being no reason for her to do this. She’s literally taking the keys out of her purse, where they fit, and handing them to a person not carrying anything to fit these keys. So that part I don’t get.
Getting them out of the way so she an find something else I’d assume
Temporarily. To hold and gaze at while doing so! I had not thought of that.
She may intend to leave her purse in the car and pass off her keys to her partner who has real pockets on his pants.
I carry stuff in my pockets already. I could fit an additional key on a ring, maybe with a small tricket too. Otherwise, I’d have to leave behind my needed pocket items to fit that. And it doesn’t look comfortable either. You need a “valet mode” for that thing (easy detach car key only)!
