    Upside:

72.8% indicate they are likely to vote for political candidates who support aggressive climate policies.

Climate change is a solvable problem. There just needs to be enough support to create an international organization with a mandate to enforce limits on fossil fuel use.

I reject this level of nihilism. Things are bad, and the future may be bleak, but to give up now is to forfeit any chance of it ever getting better.

A better future IS possible. We CAN build it. We WILL build it.

Doomerism is a tool to engender compliance. It’s how you get people to divert their time and energy from the here and now to some superstitious fixation on the afterlife.

You were not born at the start of the Holocene Extinction. You will not live to see the end of it. You’ve got a solid 60 years to do your part in your tiny corner of an enormous planet with eight billion others who all got here thanks to the hard work of 30,000 years of prior human labor. There’s absolutely no reason to give up before you’ve even started.

Yeah and the only way is for everyone to become politicians, which is hard and will take a decade

The theory of the vanguard party is that you don’t need everyone to be professionally political. You just need a network of proletariat aligned clubs and local leaders who have the trust and support of the public.

And that network became the backbone of the party structure, instrumental in revolutionizing the economy.

I don’t think humanity is doomed. Humans are, and life in general is, pretty damn resilient. Even the worst predictions for climate change won’t wipe everyone and everything out, but it will change things.

Modern society is what’s doomed. There are going to be some hard fucking times ahead, and whatever rises from the ashes won’t look anything like today. But something will rise from the ashes, that’s pretty much guaranteed.

In 250 years, there will still be grass on the ground and clouds in the sky. Ducks will still land in any body of water they find and do duck things. Ants will still build nests. There will still be fish in the rivers and oceans. There will still be rodents scurrying around who are preyed upon by birds who will still by flying in the sky. And yes, there will still be humans.

We will lose some species. A lot of species. We will lose some people. A lot of people. Cities will crumble, countries will burn, wars will be fought, and once pristine landscapes will be turned to wastelands. But this will not be the final chapter for humanity, and certainly not for life itself. What comes next depends on what knowledge we are able to preserve for future generations, and their ability to access it.

It sounds like you agree with them but are using a different definition of “doomed”. Doom means “death, destruction, or any very bad situation that cannot be avoided” (Cambridge English Dictionary) and not “completely erased from the face of the Earth”. What you described seems to match the dictionary definition of doom exactly.

I’m a long term optimist, short term pessimist. I honestly believe that one day, humanity will come together and expand to the stars. We are the best and only hope that life on this planet has.

But I also know I will never live to see that day. Not even close. Every sign points to looming disaster that will rock us to our core. It’s highly possible we fall back to almost pre-industrial levels of technology within 5 generations, if not worse and for longer. It will be the biggest dark age our society has ever seen.

But here’s the thing about human society, it has been around for a stupidly short time. Barely over 10,000 years. On nearly every scale that matters, that’s a blink. We will bounce back. It could take 200 years, or 2000 years, or even 20000 years; but we as a species will survive. What is important now is preserving knowledge before the collapse. The more we can save and preserve for future generations, the more our future societies will benefit and the faster they can recover.

Thats why I say that I don’t believe humanity is doomed. It’s not about the definition of “doomed”, it’s about the definition of “humanity” and how long of a time frame you consider.

Nope although it took some time for things around the october surprise and iran contra to come out enough and even more time for me to get it. Nixon is before my time and it took awhile to really get why people hated him. At that time it seemed like we were doing two steps forward and one back and I did not realize that all our forward was generally coming by the sacrifice of future steps forward. I still feel we were generally making progress until citizens united which pretty much sunk us.

yeah and it was like the late 90’s and aughts were things were done that looked good but folks, like myself, did not realize how badly they were. I was part of a student group that started recycling at my initial college and we basically took the profit from metal to subsidize the plastic recycling with paper and glass being pretty neutral. This was with students doing the work and having seperate canisters for different types of recycling. I remember when the blue bin became big it was like. Huh. Will that work. Initially the drivers were sorting at pickup time into different areas so like ok. I actually think at that point the systems were being set up pretty legitamately but I think quickly it was found china would take it all and the messaging to homes was you could put more and more things in the recycling. Recycle everything message. It did not matter because china would take it all. Then china stopped and all of a sudden they were not longer seperating at pickup and there was way to many things being put in for domestic recycling at the homes. Plus the businesses were used to easy profit over difficult to make a modest profit. Messaging went out about recycling limitations but it did not get around as fast as the throw everything with a recycling symbol in and then some. Now its all picked up like garbage and I think most of it ends up in landfill with a bit of token recycling happening. I mean like even if you were in the no it was hard to see how this was evolving.

      What?!

The kids are supposed to think shit is fucked and old people need to try something new. Even in good times they’ll think that, because that’s how humans are wired and why society keeps progressing, a constant stream of inexperienced people making mistakes because sometimes someone finds something that works better.

That is the complete opposite of “fuck it, there’s no point in trying”.

Absolutely nothing about punk has been defeatism, that’s is also the complete opposite.
