When did Apple ever do more and cost less, outside of the early 80s? The “Apple tax” has been around for 40 years. Regardless of whether it did more or less, and it’s done lots of both over the years, Apple stuff has cost more for almost the entirety of their existence and you don’t even need to specify what type of device.
Me when I hate Apple and can’t think straight
Their laptop are amongst the best for the price right now and since a bit of time
Which has always been true. They just don’t sell cheap low perfomance hardware. It’s like complaining ferraris are expensive, and then someone points out actually they have a lot of performance for what you pay for, especially when compared to Lamborghinis or Maseratis at the same price point… yeah…
To be clear i haven’t bought apple in decades and never will again. I used to be a big fan in the 2000s and 2010s though.
More performance maybe but you’re trapped in their walled garden so you can’t do what you want with it.
Yep 100%
Correct, this won’t be. Even 10 years ago when I was on Reddit, people tended to side with Android and androids in 2016 actually did kinda suck. 85-92% of all Lemmy users are that, guys like me who used Reddit when it was good and left when they asked for a selfie to “confirm my age” on my 15 year old Reddit account.
These days, now on the fediverse? Even Apple users hate Apple, Android fans are packing their bags and moving onto either GrapheneOS or SailfishOS, and no one is really a ‘fanboy’ of anything anymore. We hate even the shit we like.
Except me. I’m still a fan of eating ass.
Except me. I’m still a fan of eating ass.
Is this how you let us know you still daily drive a Windows Phone?
Whoa, don’t cross kink shame sadists with booty sweat.
Lol, ROFL even.
That would be a masochist, not a sadist. Only sadistic if they could force the rest of us to use Windows Phone OS. As is, they are just punishing themselves, hence a masochist.
Signed, a competitive swimmer, and a Top…
To your edit - microsoft’s modus operandi is sadism
I got constantly down-voted in that cesspool for stating things like that. I like my librem for work, it’s really just a mini laptop and still use an iphone for calls and watching anime.
And you know it’s things like getting constant reminders that your cloud is full, don’t worry I know it’s not with that one bug bringing pictures of my exes back. It’s 900 days since you backed up your files! It’s been years and you can’t get the message that I won’t be paying you money for your cloud crap? Insanity. Or let’s update to having more shit you don’t need! And kill your battery and slow your phone down. Didn’t update? Well we still did a soft update.
It was cool to get a apple 4s, now it’s like what year is it? meh I don’t care. And basically having a tablet sucks. I held my 12 mini recently and I was like wow; broke my finger so holding the tablet phones sucks. And I don’t need 50 MB photos.
The settings menu is a myriad like andriod now, I don’t need a labyrinth of settings.
Now that I think about it Tim Apple is a fan of eating ass, so we get to experience it as well! /s
My government issued transgender girlfriend got a job working at the post office and callls me cringe for the fact I served in the US Army. She has a Motorola Signature 27.
Oh.
So that’s what they use selective service for when you’re trans.
Since I’m not “allowed” in the military for being a tranny, they’ll instead draft me to be a veteran’s fleshlight.
What a strange dystopia this timeline has been turning out to be…
There’s one simple trick to avoid all of this shit, leave the US and go to Columbia, they don’t have vagrancy laws there. Hitch hike to Mexico, then pass through Central America until you reach Panama City. Then you need to cross the Darien Gap, this is about a 100 kilometers of roadless jungle that lies between Columbia and Panama. Wether you die or survive, you will be free.
I’m not sure if you heard, but on Google the Darien Gap has been renamed America’s Taint.
I eat ass.
Lol I don’t know what to think on that. Looking at the phone, got enough cameras? Is there one that goes into your pants?
But I do think people get too much flack for enlisting; I know a lot of people that they had a choice of enlist or go to prison or become homeless.
Homeless or prison then. Enlisting because you’re desperate and destitute only feeds the cycle of suffering.
You sir are my hero , someone had to say it
I’m no spring chicken anymore and I don’t remember Apple ever costing less.
And their software has always been anti-intuitive.
The last Apple I purchased was the Apple IIc. Has much changed since then? Do we still need to flip the floppy disk or can they do that with a robot now?
I can say that around 2010, the value proposition was there. Longer lifespan, held their value for resale, better built in software. iLife and iWork were a crazy value compared to what you got from Office and whatnot. New versions of the OS were way cheaper. Wasn’t snow leopard like $60?
Macs were a premium then, so were iPhones.
yeah until apple silicon came, macs were hot garbage with a ludicrous price tag.
What about right now? Isn’t the MacBook Neo reasonably priced (compared to the competition) for a 16Gb RAM laptop?
Edit: I was wrong, it has only 8Gb
Just checked:
8 GB RAM, 256 GB SSD: 799€
8 GB RAM, 512 GB SSD: 899€
https://www.apple.com/de/macbook-neo/specs/
They don’t even offer 16 GB in 2026
Crazy, I could have sworn that they announced it with 16Gb… I thought I remember that was the main selling point back then, didn’t know they went with the 8Gb as well.
Thanks for checking!
To be fair, iPhones, when not buying the newest one, are quite reasonably priced too. Friend got an Iphone 16 50% cheaper than I got my Android.
Don’t think Apple offers a 16gb Neo. It’s also $600 USD and there are many cheaper options from other manufacturers.
The Neo is basically sitting in the middle between the newer iPad Airs and the iPhone 17 in terms of computing power.
I personally don’t think the Neo is worth it, but if you think you need a mac device, then it’s a decent ‘budget’ option.
Files are obviously a nefarious invention by those evil Linux communists!
Big Linux forcing everyone into their ecosystem by being functional.
When did Apple ever cost less (than anything)? 2nd part is spot on.
That particular ad copy was used for the roll out of the Macintosh which debuted in 1993
Apple stuff stopped costing less around 1996.
Before the time of enshittification, the implicit understanding was that every new model would bring significant new benefits at the same price (or minor price increase).
New products were improvements and not oh look new shiny, gimme money or no shiny.
Let’s give credit where credit is due: Apple’s ARM developments are fantastic. IMO, they’re back on track on the innovation front. The price, however, is still very Apple.
That’s called planned obsolescence. And it’s the reason PC is almost always a better deal. Do Mac users actually think that buying a whole new computer every 2-3 years is Mac doing them a favor?
I’m not sure it ever cost less per se, but there was an infamous period of time there where a Mac laptop was the best way to run Windows and all the media was eating it up
When did Apple generally cost less?
It’s only been sporadically that Apple released really good cheap hardware. The second or third geberation MacBook Air for example was a powerhouse for casual office work. Early M series as well had some good price points. But overall they’ve always charged a lot of RAM and peripherals.
iPhone was always above market, ipad is premium priced (but feels like the only major tablet that gained traction).
The Apple II line, the Macintosh line, and the Macintosh II line generally cost less than an equivalent PC (specifically an IBM PC 5150, XT, or AT), and most PC clones.
Apple generally cost less from 1977 to 1993.
Hence why Apple had a huge passionate DIY fandom who even made components and peripherals for those lineages, anywhere from custom memory and processor upgrades, to tape drives that can read almost any format, to predecessors of the “smart home”/IoT systems such as remotely controlling the baby rocker. The last I knew of was an internal floppy drive mod for the iMac.
Now with planned obsolescence in mind, the current Apple regime is trying to disallow anyone from ever prolonging the lifespan of its products.
It never really cost less, but it was there slogan in the 90s.
“Cost less, do more. It’s that simple”.
Makes sense. I bought my first Mac in the mid 2000s (the early Intel models), and back then they were more expensive and did less.
I installed VMware Fusion and Boot Camp and then it did just as much or more than PCs. But the big thing was the total amortized cost was good and printer drivers weren’t pure evil.

Apple Lisa? Apple II? The first core 2 duo macbooks were actually cheaper than the competition when they came out. I bought one. That’s it I think.
The first generation of Arm Mac’s were pretty cost effective.
Yeah, it’s not a hard rule, it’s just not consistent and depends on your upgrades.
If you bought the mid-late 2010s models for example you basically needed ram upgrades, which cost an arm and a leg. Early M1 the swap was fast so RAM was acceptable at defaults, but also if you bought an M1 or M2 Max you really lucked out with LLMs and prices overall. M3 mini at 64gb I think was unbeatable value.
Current gen everything is fucked, but they’re pushing Mac Studio for LLM clusters and so no, they’re not cheaper anymore. They’re cheaper than a $100K GPU.
It never costed less
it actually did in the early days, when the options were buying a mainframe or buying an Apple PC
Okay then it’s not “Apple Now”. It’s “Apple since 1990 or whatever”
Is this just a shot at apple or did I miss something and they’re trying to “get rid of files”?
They do their best to get rid of any structured file management.
You can’t even access anything but the user documents folder in default Finder anymore.
Its worse on iphones, I was trying to manage a previous staff members iphone recently, and what the phones file browser, windows, and Linux could see were all different, and the phone file browser couldn’t actually access some of the folders Linux could.
You can’t even access anything but the user documents folder in default Finder anymore.
Uh what? Are you saying you “cannot access” anything else because you have to give permissions when asked? Either way it’s patently false. And I’m not a fan of 95% of the things apple does, so don’t think I’m just blindly defending them. I use a Mac for work but I’d rather it be Linux.
I think it is also wrong, apple has never been do more for less, I think OP is dreaming, the get rid of files is because iOS’ file browser isn’t a file browser, it is like Samsung’s file browser, it tries to abstract away the idea of an hieracarchial filesystem which is just a horrible non sensical idea and is actively harmful to their users

I’m curious what you mean, because my phone has a perfectly usable file browser. By default it creates a data folder for each app, the same way Windows programs can create a directory in your user Documents folder for their data. In fact, there are some things that Apple’s file browser actually does better. For instance, the iPad has native pdf support, complete with markup, signing, combining multiple documents, etc… All available directly in the file browser.

It even has SMB support and I use it with my NAS. I am very confused by this ‘what are files’.
If you ever use a iPhone or iPad you’ll see it follows a model of apps being sandboxed to their own folders, and even the file manager is not a real one, it’s just a hobbled little BS
It’s a search bar that sometimes won’t find a file even if you give the exact name.
Doing my part: downvoted, for being irrelevant for 20-30 years. Apple hasn’t done much of anything to keep prices down for decades with some minor exceptions that pale in comparison to shit like a $1000-2000 phone.
And them being shitty about hiding the filesystem on iOS is practically 20 years old now too.
What’s the latter portion referring to? I don’t keep up with bullshit anymore so no clue what they’re up to these days.
In 2007 when the iPhone was released, from day one the filesystem was obscured from the user. OP is posting some hot off the presses shit!
Nice meme from 2007
They looked for an older one but couldn’t one
costs less
In the entire history of Apple has this ever been true?
Even when they fired Jobs and tried to compete in capability, all of their stuff was more expensive than the competition.
and thats why i like microsoft
I disagree. Currently apple does way more technological advancements than we ever had. Imagine an rtx5090 performance in a small factor of a 300w box. But it is also 96gb of ram on top and it also have the fastest CPU on earth (blender benchmark). The entire Mac mini M6 costs like a single 5090.
And considering how android moves backwards, enshittifies, removing features and adding fuckton of tracking, while apple is moving towards preserving privacy and anti-ai.
Don’t get me wrong, apple is still a walled garden, but they don’t even block you from installing Linux on their apple silicon macbooks.
You’ve only further convinced me further that apple cultists are beyond saving.
Android can be forked and modified, and at least a decent portion of the devices it runs on can have their bootloaders unlocked. Apple has never offered that functionality to iOS to users without the users taking it themselves.
As for the M6, you must be smoking the strongest shit in the world if you think that a specialized application benchmark is an indicator that the mac hardware is universally superior in all computing roles (try gaming on it if you would like to see what I mean).
Apple’s privacy standards are not a monolith by any means (Remember the deleted photos being restored incidents), and if you don’t think they will sell you out then I have a memecoin for you to invest in.
Also, the entire Asahi Linux project is largely made without endorsement or official documentation. It’s similar in circumstance to the people getting android to run on iPhones - possible but not supported or condoned.
Android can’t be forked properly anymore. It is barely opensource at that point.
AOSP? Google publishes it once a quarter, can’t contribute to it. And not to mention that you have to use proprietary blobs, otherwise your phone just won’t run properly.
I’m not trying to put Google on a pedestal here (they are just as if not more unscrupulous as Apple in terms of business practices), but the ability for Android to be forked at all is what sets it apart from iOS. GrapheneOS is probably the best example of a forking project done right, and something Apple will never allow as an option for the user to install (or at the very least, will never provide the core resources needed to make a project like GrapheneOS work on iPhones).
As for the proprietary blobs, that’s incumbent upon all hardware manufacturers. We have to be a bit pragmatic to say that a completely libre phone is still largely a pipedream for the majority of the userbase (similar to how linux is often installed on proprietary hardware without libreboot), but there is a difference between providing proprietary blobs to be used for development, and holding them under lock and key forever.
Gaming on macOS is most certainly not held back by the hardware. I’m not here to refute most of your opinions, other than to say dismissing Apple Silicon is a profoundly naive take on things.
I don’t believe Apple Silicon as a whole should be dismissed, but I do think because it is a standard that is not in line with the rest of the industry, it’s hard for the hardware to have widespread adoption for practical computing in a lot of areas.
ARM as a whole seems to be plagued with the issue of trying to standardize an incredibly fragmented ecosystem, and Apple does not help things by trying to maintain their software moat throughout their development.
As an electrical engineering student, I can recognize the achievements made through the universally good aspects of the hardware (battery life, for instance). The parts I have issue with are mostly related to how Apple does business (lack of repairability and trying to keep most development features behind a fee or internal use only).
I see no reason that those issues will change without Apple being forced to, and as such I do not have faith in the platform for wider usecases.
There’s plenty of their business practices that it’s fair to critique. I share many of those critiques.
But saying ARM is out of line with the industry is such a gamer-centric take– and 10+ year old one at that.
I will concede there are some decisions of Apples that are indeed anti consumer, but I believe most others (especially hardware related) have some nuance. Take for example soldered RAM. Anti Apple zealots will claim it’s simply an anti-repairablity tactic to increase sales; Apple fanboys will claim some technical improvement that has some basis in fact. I’m of the opinion that the truth lies somewhere in between; there’s some truth to both.
The problem with supporting apple’s RAM soldering is they also solder storage and parts pair it, which has no basis in performance or longetivity. (Leading myself and others to believe that it is just planned obsolescence)
You misinterpreted my statement about ARM - ARM is widespread but has issues with being a unified platform (ARM devices are often specialized rather than general purpose), so it’s less of the architecture being the problem and more a double whammy of Apple-isms and ARM devices tending to be relegated to certain applications compared to x86.
Um, no. There is no Linux Kernel that you can install to any apple silicon past M3.
Virtual machines do not count.
I mean, to be pedantic here, they never specified the generation of apple silicon. Also there’s nothing preventing you from installing linux on later hardware; It’s just that the software doesn’t exist yet.
And considering how android moves backwards, enshittifies,
Android is becoming a closed ecosystem like apple was from the start
EnShItIfIcAtIoN
Apple does not preserve privacy, they just collect the data themselves. They are also pushing AI, with their “Apple Intelligence”, so are just as much an offender in that space as anyone.
Also, them “pushing the envelope”, doesn’t really advance much. Nobody can use their phones hardware anyway due to the walled garden and anyone buying Apple products is doing it for the software and statement. People who don’t like their closed ecosystem are not going to buy their phones, even if the devices are 20% faster than the next.
Apple will do anything to line their pockets further, Google just realised they can get away with this too now, the companies were scared before, but now they know customers are just pushovers and will buy up anything. The world is fucked.
