The amount of Bible verses with Jesus absolutely condemning the rich and the wealthy is overwhelming. And it’s not like “oh that’s open to interpretation”. He’s very clear in saying that rich people won’t go to heaven. He’s very clear in what to do with your money (help the poor and sinners).
His entire message is about “living as he lived”. It’s amazing how much Christians in America have been able to completely remove all of those aspects by just saying “well, Jesus did that so we don’t have to. He died living a selfless life. All we have to do is ‘believe the story’”.
It has to be the laziest, most American interpretation of a religion ever. It’s just fucking embarrassing to me though. Like, Im not Christian, but even I am embarrassed by most American Christians.
There are exceptions. But, most Americans use their Christianity as a shield for being shit people. Their religion isn’t even Christianity, it’s capitalism, and worship of wealth. The Christians that go to church every week are much more interested in hearing their pastor talk about how Trump is enacting gods plan. They know talking points for why Trump’s not a pedophile, why Musk is a genius, or why trans kids in sports are destroying the economy. They couldn’t tell you what Jesus said about where Christians should “store their riches”. They’d probably say “a bank or a safe”.
I’m a priest (Episcopal Church) and one of the things that I frequently remind my parishioners is that Christianity is intended to be a practice, not a belief. What’s happened is that the term “Christian” has been severed from any concrete form of practice (by utilizing the whole “faith, not works” thing and misconstruing it). When Jesus says “I am the way, the truth, and the life” He’s using active language (a way can only be walked, truth sought, life lived). But so many Christians have turned that saying into something about precepts.
It’s the biggest thing about Christianity, its supposed to be a philosophy that you live your life on, not a get of jail free card or to sell you indulgences. One of the best books I’ve ever read was “christ vs religion” by Witness Lee. God came in the flesh to give us a way of life.

The guy who first described the concept of FOSS is the same guy who popularized “copyleft”. Although by his own admission he wasn’t the one who first thought of the pun.

I’m very surprised too. I’m on Lemmy a lot. I’ve been using Linux full-time for nearly a year now and learning about open source projects. Somehow that term has just slipped under my awareness until now.
Thinking about it, I came across the terminology when I was deciding what licence to use for a side project I was coding, and it was on the webpages telling me about various licences folks use for open source projects.
So I’ve only learned this term from looking at licensing from the other side of the table, so to speak, so I suspect that most people who aren’t programmers wouldn’t come across it because it’s not even included in the text of most licences. It’s a unifying concept, rather than a contract term.
It’s always nice when I’m about to install some software and it says the name of a copyleft licence in aware of. When it says GPLv3 as the title, for example, I stop reading and say we’re good to go.
On one hand, glad you like it and congrats on being part of today’s lucky 10,000.
On the other hand, I’m a bit dismayed that the concept remains so obscure that even somebody extensively on Lemmy hadn’t heard of it. It’s a fight for freedom and your comment shows we’re losing harder than I realized.

Eh… Tbh Jesus wasn’t much of a political revolutionary, more of a cultural one. He did condemn the tyranny of gentiles, but also urged his followers to pay their taxes to rome and to obey their demands. Saying if a Roman asks you to carry something one mile, carry it for two instead.
It seems like he was just trying to keep under the Roman radar and worked more to change the culture of local Jewish communities.

This sounds like malicious compliance. What boss is happy if you put something down a mile from where they asked you to put it? That’s a discussion in a 1:1 at least.
I think it was more of a metaphor of getting them to subvert roman expectations. Romans thought of the Jewish people as very stubborn and independent, so when forcing them to do manual labor they would usually expect it to lead to confrontation.
Yeah I’m kind of joking-not-joking. I get that it’s about going above and beyond to prove something, but it’s still a silly example.

Yeah I don’t know what to tell you, the last guy fucked up. Those crossmembers are structural and not up to code. We are going to have to completely tear out the old stuff and replace it with a new frame. And with the price of lumber these days, it’s going to set you back a bit. Many US Christians have no idea what the Bible says and rely entirely on what their pastor/priest tells them. They’re shitty hateful people who wear Christianity as an identity instead of actually living by its teachings, and just assume their deity is just like them.

At least copyleft-licensed (e.g. GPL), as opposed to permissively-licensed (e.g. BSD), Open Source software is about as anti-corporate as it’s possible to get. That’s why Apple switched from bash to zsh, for example: they wanted to get rid of the copyleft. It’s also why stuff like Alpine Linux is a dangerous trend.
I think Jesus would be very fond of copyleft licensing, as it is specifically designed to withhold control from those who would exploit it and thus keep users ungovernable.
That’s why I said generally…copy left is great, I totally support it. But it also has the issue that without corporate donations, it’s hard for developers

Alpine Linux swaps out GNU libc, GNU coreutils, and systemd for musl, BusyBox, and OpenRC, which have weaker licensing (MIT, GPLv2-only, and 2-clause BSD respectively, vs. GPLv3+ for the GNU stuff and LGPLv2.1+ for systemd). Part of the reason for it is to be lighter and smaller to be more useful for embedded systems and containers, but it also has the effect of making it more attractive to corporate exploitation.
In general, the more popular permissively-licensed stuff gets compared to strong-copyleft stuff, the easier it is for corporate bad actors to do things like TiVoize it or go closed-source entirely.
The software was already corporately exploited. Not much lost here. In fact, I would argue that BSD licensing keeps projects more free of corporate influence if started by hobbyists.
Corpo forks BSD/Apache/whatever software, doesn’t publish source, nerds don’t use it and look for the original, the end.
Corpo forks copyleft software, publishes releases on GutHib with literal zip files in the repo semi annually. Original maintainer gets taunted with “but the corpo one has feature X, the code is free, you should use it”. If they don’t merge it, they get labeled an egoist and people go use the corporate one. If they do merge it, eventually the entire project gets bloated and barely readable, is held together by @redhat.com patches, and eventually all development is just corporate decisions. There’s no escape.
You know, we are all victims of it ourselves. I am using Firefox rn. There was little to no “conversion” as they started out corporate. They have patches merged from the Tor people for actual privacy, although removed from the settings because “meh, nobody would want that” (sponsors would disapprove). The privacy they are marketing for normies is a list of like 20 domains.
Yeah uh so we are very private by default, there’s no google tracking but if a site loads an ad or a youtube embed there’s google tracking, also we block embeds for privacy except specifically youtube.
It’s all corporate decisions. While I don’t use the specific variant(s) and didn’t observe it, I once saw the Firefox home page on someone else’s device. It was football stats followed by “sponsored links”. I thought it was Edge for a second.
And there’s no escape. Web pages are no longer actual pages oftentimes, they are fat blobs of 3 language conversions on top of each other targeting only the specific 3 (sometimes 2) big brand web browsers as the backend: Firefox, Chromium and Apple’s Webkit fork. They are all corporate. The fat blob generators are also corporate.

Jesus was a failed prophet who kept saying heaven will arrive on earth imminently (“this generation will certainly not pass away until all these things have happened”—that generation passed and none of those things he predicted would happen did) and it never did and trashed a temple because of his beliefs and that got him killed by the state. He literally trashed the temple because that was a prophecy he proclaimed and tried to fulfill it. He also said to get into heaven when the world ended was to be good and not to be rich so he was quite the populist in that respect.
If he were alive today he’d be a youtuber talking about UFOs and aliens coming to save humanity because they hate nukes and saying that all we have to do is be good people to have the aliens save us. And he probably uses open source software too.
Learning about the bible made me the agnostic I am today haha, but I wont go as far to say that there is nothing beyond death. I have no idea where humans get consciousness from and why Im not living my life as an ant and am instead living as a human being in the 2026th year of our lord
