Hmmm did golden sun have a ceremony at the start? Been so long
I think so, basically?
I know Chrono Trigger does… and Dragon Warrior 3… either you’re meeting with the King, or it’s like an actual formal ball or something?
Tho chrono trigger didn’t have everyone in the village dying. No idea about dragon warrior.
Dragons dogma has everyone dying but no ceremony either
… are there any old jrpgs that like… actually do a fake out ‘big party for quaint place’, but its like, the beginning of the 2nd or 3rd act, but makes you think its just the end of the game?
Closest I can think is trials of mana. I think you got everything you needed then you go to the final area and then you find out you had to revisit all locations or something like that? Again, been a while so I might be wrong
Chrono Chross kind of was like that… The intro wasn’t in a peaceful village or anything. But it put you in a later game area with a full party.
Not everyone dies in dragon’s dogma, Grigory basically destroys like a house and marks you then fucks off.
I dont think we get to know all the nameless npcs that die but in theory its a pretty big battle but yeah, not everyone dies
That’s exactly the one I thought of!
You obviously missed Neverwinter Nights 2 !
A ceremony to celebrate the defeat of the Ancient Evil that plagued us 200 years ago that can never return or be reawakened.

Penny for your thoughts
Tales of Phantasia has an excellent first town. Despite being an 16-bit game, it has water reflection, beautiful rain, and a vocal theme song! 16-bit!
The theme song only plays after almost everyone died, but it’s worth it.
The people who figured out you can use localized palettes on SNES hardware were goddamn geniuses. Donkey Kong Country and Doom Troopers in particular stood out for somehow looking like they were running on a warehouse full of Crays instead of a gray and purple plastic thing the size of a shoebox.
Trails in the Sky inverts this in a nice way.
Tap for duology spoiler
You grow up in a nice village that gets you used to peaceful neighbors and little danger. Even after leaving, the game is slow to build any real threat. Turns out the reason your hometown was peaceful is because the toughest badass in the land (your unimpressive deadbeat dad) lives there. The inciting tragedy actually happened the next country over, and your secretive refugee stepbrother grew up carrying painful memories from that.

Chrono Trigger fits right up until the end. Only the main characters are affected by the crazy shit that happens at the celebration. 😌
Yeah RPG is fun, but when are we getting RPG 2?
They’ll start working on it once Chess 2 is released.
Didn’t they already release Chess 2?
Yeah it’s called “5-D Chess with Multiverse Time Travel”.
And it will break your brain if you try to understand it lol
