Never seen anybody using emoji in any community. I did use once or twice, but the way its absent over here, I’m starting to think its part of some implicit rules lemmy has

Emojis are a trashy signal for me I hate them. I want my text monochrome. Cool unicode symbols get a pass. “⚠” Yes “⚠️” no.

I’ve always been of the opinion that one can use their words. I’ve never read anything with emojis crammed in where I felt they’ve added anything of substance. It just seems lazy and a bit trashy.

Yes. I’m well aware I’m a curmudgeon. I make no apologies.

I see Lemmy as an older crowd that prefers ASCII emotes. Although the do work in some situations.

I use them on discord on sometimes on othef chat platforms. I don’t really like them in longer form text like lemmy or reddit.

They also, at least for me, carry context that doesn’t make that much sense outside one community. For example I used laughing cat emoji that we use to signify being amused and a guy from a different community thought I was mocking him.

God I hate the emojis used as bullet points trend so much, it looks so tacky and is the biggest immediate sign of a vibecoded slop project

I really don’t understand where it even came from. It’s not like people were consistently using them as bullet points in the training data…at least not to the extent that LLMs are making it a trope.

Check my post history, I guess. 😅

They’re helpful in providing the proper context to a text-based convo. IRL, you’d just see my face and body language and hear my tone and understand things better so we have to adjust when texting. This is why people feel like they need the “/s” for sarcasm and whatnot. 👍

      Nope just annoying.

The best part of anonymous forums is not having any tone.

Oh my god man get a grip, everyone has a tone over writing, like how yours right now is rude.

Using emojis just communicates more informality plus whatever the emoji communicates. It’s not annoying to most people, and it shouldn’t be to you

I disagree. There is no tone on the internet, that is what makes forums work. Emojis suck. Period.

And I know this because you think my words have a tone. They do not. They are just a statement.

Edit: I want to add, part of my aversion is that people often just slap whatever the keyboard recommends to them into a sentence, or AI helped write it. They clutter communication, not help it at this point.

A long time ago, like in the 80’s people actually discussed what would indicate being friendly and they went with :-). But now its dogs, cats, silly clowns, hats, that stupid celebration and starry eyed smiley and so on. Just plain annoying to have to read.

I’ve been conditioned over time to not use them on internet forums but I use them a lot when texting. So it feels kind of weird to see one around on a Lemmy comment but I don’t hate them

For me it’s part of non-verbal communication and empathy when used to add context to what you’re trying to communicate. But I don’t use it online either… I think it’s because some forums don’t enable them or it’s not practical if you’re on a desktop per example. Maybe that’s why the Internet is so miserable 😅

I think my first thought is that MAGA’s rage bot farms will use a lot of laughing emojis to taunt people.
