along with the strong censoring that has occurred on reddit throughout the years, they have now removed r/all from the app and while using a desktop/laptop browser. instead of being able to stumble upon new subreddits you never knew existed, it wants to curate what you’re allowed to see
This is the reason I am trying Lemmy. I just want some un-algorithmatized internet please. Not sure if this is it yet.
I prefer lemmy more than reddit. My biggest complaint is Lemmy can be a bit of an echo chamber, but idk if there’s anywhere I can go that isn’t
I think echo chamber is the wring word here so much as humans naturally gravitate into communities and tribes.
In fact, that was the exact appeal of reddit and Lemmy now. People could foster communities and find likeminded people.
Survival by the numbers exceeds the fittest.
One advantage Lemmy has for now is that it isn’t under the same corporatisation Reddit fell under… for now.
I dont have a problem with like minded people. However the echo chamber is the word I meant. Valid criticisms of the popular belief are often downvoted or dismissed. Misinformation is more likely to spread without correction. Sensationalized article titles are likely to be taken at face value without reading even the first paragraph of the article, let alone different spurces of information. People will dog pile and agree with something that isn’t even true because it aligns with their existing beliefs. I recognize that’s human nature, but that’s why it’s important to not be so echoey
misinformation is more likely to spread without correction
This hasn’t been my experience on Lemmy at all. Misinformation here is usually called out in the first comment, which is counter to what I’ve seen on Reddit, Facebook, twitter, etc. where people are more interested in making funny quips than actually engaging with the topic.
My experience with Reddit has been no different though. I don’t think that is a Lemmy issue but a broader social media issue.
Edit: Looking back at your initial comment, I see that you made this exact point.
do you like it so far?
I like it, but I could do without the ugly ad banner at the bottom. One thing Reddit does right is its ads.nvmThat sounds like your Lemmy client/app, not Lemmy itself.
Lol you’re probably right. My bad
Ads? What ads? Reddit ads are horrible
I switched to the Voyager app because the first one I tried did that. Voyager has been great so far. I’ve only been actively on Lemmy for a couple of weeks now but I like it.
I’ll try it out. I tried out a few and liked Boost the best, but I can’t remember which ones I tried if I’m honest.
I don’t have that in Voyager. Maybe try a few other apps and see what speaks to you.
Reddit was good for niche subjects (certain type of workout, specific sports team), but the overall page became intolerable. I opened it the other day for the first time in a month and didn’t enjoy being fed content and realizing how much of the interaction is just bots.
Lemmy is quieter, and you’ll get fewer responses. However, the responses you get are generally thoughtful and more likely to lead to a functional conversation. Quality over quantity in my experience so far
I’ve been banned twice this week (so far).
One for pointing out there will be a rise in terrorism against the US for their actions in the middle east.
Another one for saying Pam Bondi is such a hated public figure she’s never going to be safe in public again.
Neither of these comments violate any rules. They are not calls to violence.
I know how to circumvent Reddit’s methods for keeping banned users off their platform and I know how to check if I’ve been shadowbanned. Most people don’t. So they’re undoubtedly bleeding users at this point due to their automated bot banning garbage. People must be getting auto-banned left and right for things that are clearly not violating policy. And those people aren’t going to come back. I know how to come back and I’m almost done with putting the minimal effort into it.
Reddit is crashing HARD. And I’m totally into it.
I’ve been banned so many times over there. And I’m not saying this as if I’ve ever done anything to try to be banned over there. The vast majority of the time when I have been banned it’s been because the moderators of certain subs COMPLETELY misinterpreted what I had been trying to say and banned me and then when I contacted them to try to explain the misunderstanding they’ve refused to accept that there was actually a misunderstanding.
Some VERY popular subs have really bad moderators.
I had 12 years on reddit, started catching bans (maybe 1 was legit, and I mean maybe), but after the last one, I deleted. They even gave me a space to put “fuck reddit, fuck spez” for my parting message, and I meant it from the bottom of my heart.
I know how to circumvent Reddit’s methods for keeping banned users off their platform and I know how to check if I’ve been shadowbanned. Most people don’t.
Bro can you tell me please 🥺
im somewhat surprised they dint shadowban you. they were purging and shadowbanning all last year, they mustve stepped back on that after realizing they were losing too many irl users. now its just mostly BOTS, or propaganda.
It’s easy to get banned from subs, but it’s very hard to get banned from Reddit as a site. You have to go out of your way to either be extremely bigoted, obnoxious, or do something illegal for that to happen.
I got perma banned for saying I hope the US and China burn each other down in their economic war.
Naw the auto bans are site wide. If you have a few of the auto bans it permas you. As he mentioned the auto bans trigger on non rule breaking comments mostly in relation to the idea of violence. And the appeals process is absolute shit. I said something like “you can’t just punch a person in the face if you don’t like what they say” and got the auto ban (and perma because I had been banned before for similar). I appealed and got a response saying it had been reviewed and my comment was not rule breaking. My perma ban didn’t go away and so I appealed again and my ban request got denied even though the reason for my ban was overturned. Reddit just wants happy positive and capitalism promoting content tbh.
I got my account and all my alts permabanned site-wide for calling someone “A fucking piece of human garbage” because they advocated for not only that Trans people don’t deserve rights but doesn’t care if they kill themselves, calling it “a good thing”.
So my account got banned. My porn alt which never got even a warning since I made it years ago? Banned. I make a new account now and so much as upvote a post on a subreddit I’ve never seen in my life? Instantly and automatically permabanned.
So if calling someone a piece of garbage for advocating for the violence and death of trans people, according to you, is “extremely bigoted, obnoxious, or something illegal”, maybe you might need a little introspective thought about your own reality.
Or you’re the bigoted and obnoxious person that doesn’t get banned from reddit for spouting hate. Because I went back and checked a week after I was permabanned before deleting the account? The user who advocated for Trans people to die was still commenting days later. Didn’t receive a single day.
But keep defending Reddit.
Mine was for wishing nightmares of children dying on someone justifying Israel targeting hospitals and schools.
Reddit shouldn’t be defended on this topic.
I called Tim Walz a “spineless fuck” for saying that he would never seek elected office again. Banned from a sub I was active in daily. Apparently you can’t have opinions on public figures if there are bad words involved.
That’s a sub. Not all of reddit.
I get it, but it was still annoying. Straight to perma ban. I tried to appeal it, pointing out that I had broken no rules and they just muted me. I legitimately don’t think anyone reported my comment, just some mod who likes the guy decided to ban me. It was horseshit.
I made a joke about how if everyone says that cats are invasive species and should never be let outside, we should do the same with white people.
Banned in seconds. Is my joke terribly funny? Eh, marginal at best. Is it that offensive? Maybe only if you’re extraordinarily thin skinned.
Poe’s Law. There are always too many people who will take it seriously and act in “retaliation”. If they think someone is at all likely to use what you said as a justification for stochastic violence, they will bend over backwards to interpret it as uncharitably as possible.
Because they’re stupid and they suck.
FWIW I like the joke. White people are indeed an invasive species, and my ethnicity is one of the ones labeled “white” so I would be detained too. By all means, send me to Poland. Force Europe to accept me as a citizen on the basis of my ancestry. The funny part is that I’ve said something of a similar nature in the past. Nobody cared about the white people part, but OMG did they get up in arms that I let my cat outside. You want to rustle some jimmies, tell someone that your cat ate a bird. The pitchforks and torches are coming…
I got 2 sub bans for participating in subs the mods didn’t like.
Then a week ago I got banned for promoting self harm. I did not, ai had a false positive, but they still haven’t responded to my appeal. I guess I’m kicked out for good.
It’s not hard to get a permaban from Reddit, especially if you’re pro-Palestine.
I got banned for posting combat footage of Hamas attacking IDF soldiers in Gaza to r/combatfootage The reason cited was spread to terrorist propaganda video. Reddit wide ban with no recourse followed.
There were times, when you could still post primary sources on Reddit. It’s no longer possible.
Like 90% of the site is pro Palestine, what are you talking about?
Dude, you’re on Lemmy, not Reddit.
Take your ass back to the sinking ship.
On Reddit?
Hahahahahahahahahaha
You have to go out of your way to find subs that are pro Israel. The only major ones that I can think of are mapporn and worldnews.
Reddit’s AI moderation has been ruthless as of late. Comments that are anti-Israel are heavily moderated and yes, there have been a lot of users permabanned because of their political takes on this subject.
I got a 3 day ban for saying Iran’s elementary schools were being bombed in response to someone claiming that only the IRGC were targeted. Not exactly extreme.
Like replying to a Muslim woman that I thought her rationale that the bloke who disarmed one of those Bondi shooters and didn’t use it on him was because of his interpretation that his religion is one of peace?
That’s what I got permabanned for. Which one is that, extremely bigoted, obnoxious or illegal?
I mean it’s not, but I was just making the point that often times the people who complain about getting banned are usually justifiably banned for doing things like calling for violence or being racist or trying to do something malicious. That doesn’t there aren’t exceptions.
There’s a lot of exceptions.
Way too many. I’d be reluctant to claim the numbers are in favour of genuine cases unless I knew better.
Didn’t seem that hard to me. 16 year old account. Poof. I was pretty careful and certainly didn’t advocate for violence although I did point out that violence was likely.
Reddit is censored and bottled so as to be a propaganda machine. It got too popular. As the go to it was inevitable that the powers that be would co-opt the platform into an American propaganda tool. It’s blatantly obvious too.
It’s easy to get banned from subs, but it’s very hard to get banned from Reddit as a site.
Not really. I didn’t tone down what I said in my previous comment. The two things I got banned for this week are exactly what I said in my comment above. Very short comments not violating any rules. Banned.
I also determined they’re handing out auto-bans for certain word combinations. I had a few accounts banned for mentioning the “2nd amendment” coupled with a few other terms in the same comment. Was very careful not to violate any actual site rules, especially after the first ban involving those words. I was pretty sure about this after a few bans, then I saw a whole comment chain of people talking about it as well and that confirmed my theory.
My last shadowban was a comment that literally just said “Mussolini and Gaddafi”. That’s it. Shadowbanned. You can always tell you’ve been shadowbanned cuz it’ll start telling you that you have to wait between posting comments. Then you can go to Reddit’s appeal page and if you can appeal, it means you’ve been shadowbanned. Or you can use the 3rd party shadowban checker website. And obviously your comments will stop being upvoted/downvoted or commented on because no one can see them.
And it’s not like they’re catching up to me a day or two later and determining I circumvented their bans. Some of my accounts last months and months. They always all get banned based on a single comment.
Nah. Reddit is going full shitshow and supporting the rise of fascism in America by censoring users who aren’t even breaking rules. If you’ve been on Reddit long enough, you know the leadership is awful and they’ve been consistently making bad decisions for the platform for years now.
I’ve always said it and I’ll keep saying it. It’s their platform and they can run it like they want. But I believe the “Front Page Of The Internet” has a responsibility that extends beyond themselves. And, of course, if they choose to keep making shitty decisions, they’re going to keep losing users and we’ll keep seeing an increase in Lemmy activity.
You have to go out of your way to either be extremely bigoted
looks at all the alt-right subs and the fascist users
Uhhhh…
old.reddit.com/r/all still works. i can still hit r/all from the top of the old.reddit.com homepage
Reddit and Microsoft, competing for the most anti consumer moves in a day. Hope they both lose their market shares.
Reddit is not dying fast enough
For me it was the bots, rage-bait and doxing. I hope Lemmy stays niche, cuz’ in my experience - popularity = trash community.
Celebrity worship(or worship in general) is always my stopping point. 9/10 posts on reddit now are meme with, or posts about some actor.
rage baiting on here is exploding. world news and news community are like 75% rage bait with editorialized headline nonsense the past month. and it gets tons of commentary, and if you point out the editorializing and the lies you get downvoted or reported by the delsuional nutbags.
shit’s wild.
You get downvoted and reported because of your extreme views on women and your petulant whining about how your “facts” about Israel make people think you’re a Zionist.
Hasbara ass account
This comment ironically proves his point
if you point out the editorializing and the lies you get downvoted or reported by the delsuional nutbags.
Do posters here editorialize things to make women appear better than what you and @TubularTittyFrog@lemmy.world believe them to be?
Is it only delusional nutbags that think women are not a monolith and shouldn’t be cast as money-grubbing whores?
Then so be it if my comment proves his point. It should happen more often on this site. The incels are frothing at the mouth here.
If you had a sliver of self awareness, you’ll see why you’re proving his point. But you don’t and you won’t, so you’ll continue making up stuff about me, this further demonstrating the spirit of his claim.
Oh no, you’ve cut me to my core with this comment! I’m devastated that Zionists might find my feminism threatening and they might feel censored by being called out for their bad takes!
Lol you’re lost
extreme views on women
So he has a hot take that men and women might be biologically different, or what?
Just click on his name (it’s that blue thingy above the comment thingy) and read his comments for yourself.
No, he spews ideas like women are only interested in designer bags and using men.
I was banned from News, and blocking it was the best thing that’s happened to Lemmy. My All feed went from 7/38 Trump posts to 1 out 38 Trump posts.
The high frequency of simple two sentence comments like, “I bet MAGA is sad right now. XD. Those subhuman conerva-stupids are getting what they deserve,” suggests that the perceived popularity might not be real.
I think this platform would become more popular if political subreddits weren’t automatically included in the All feed. There aren’t enough people to dilute the propoganda. It gives a bad first impression.
I just unsubscribed to News myself for the same reason. I do like keeping up with what’s going on in the world, but what gets posted is WAY too much politics. It brings in the negativity, and in your opinion that negativity spreads. I read a thread the other day about the Artemis launch and the top comments were all negative. It takes me not want to post or engage.
I’m going to start browsing only subscribed communities and see if that is any different.
Oops! All ads
When I go to old.reddit.com, I get Popular in United States and All states. But you can change the drop-down to “Everywhere.” I suppose that’s as close as we can get to r/all now.
https://old.reddit.com/r/popular/?geo_filter=GLOBAL
I have no idea how this works on the phone app, I don’t use it.
You can still use /popular on the apps. But I don’t know how different these two were (all vs popular)
r/popular is catered to your location.
So I’m trying /popular, I’ve noticed that posts don’t seem to refresh as fast as /all but it doesn’t seem tied to my location. I use JoeyForReddit There is a difference :(
- is controled by bots.
Hmm didn’t know. I need to test it
Using a direct link stopped working today and redirects to your subscriptions. The only reason I looked at Reddit was to go to r/all and sort by new to see what was out there.
I was afraid of that. I still occasionally browsed r/all on my PC after work. I’m not interested in their latest or popular pages. I’m tired of algorithms deciding what I should read or watch.
Just let me discover stuff, damn. :(
The techbros: No.
reddit.com/r/All can still get you to the r/all page, but its all old stale content now and no longer updating
Seems to work in RedReader so far.
Old.reddit.com in the browser also still works normally, only new reddit in browser doesn’t. And what kind of masochist would use new reddit over old reddit
Reddit slowly migrated away from being informational, to being identity based political vitriol. Want to know what’s currently happening with the president outside of biased left and right wing media? Too bad, but here’s an unflattering picture of him playing golf that we can all rage at, or get banned from 5 different subreddits at once because you don’t agree all cops or landlords are “bad”.
It drives me crazy. And every comment is the same thing - a joke. Usually the same joke.
I’ve quit it for all except my reading and writing communities at this point, and only because I haven’t found anything comparably sizable. If and when I can, I will be trying to help build up alternatives for those, though. Fuck reddit.
Same for me, I only visit a few niche subs that haven’t gotten traction here and even that I do with decreasing regularity.
deleted by creator
It is somewhat sad to see slow death of such old platform.
I’m OK with it at this point. Its run its course.
Imagine if only Reddit wasn’t a US company and had more chances of surviving the total eshittification happening in the whole country.
I’m imagining Lemmy.
some of the illicit subs back when they were banning these subs, moved onto forums, or obscure sites. those communities died because they are too scattered now.
They did it to themselves. Poor management.
It was always going this way when IPO was announced
They pulled that plug for me. Ain’t no way I’m taking off the internet condom, especially for them.
Nothing lasts forever.
If nothing lasts forever then the Fediverse will also have its downfall.
It surely will.
Intention driven media consumption is getting killed everywhere.
YouTube hides your subscriptions from you, the public broadcasting institutions from my country recently netflixified the experience (they try to tell you what you want to watch).
It’s so stupid.
I had to revive RSS for myself to overcome this. My feed, my decisions!
i dont bother logging in at all for youtube. only in a rare instances for certain videos.
YouTube hides your subscriptions from you
How do you mean?
Perhaps they’re referring to how YT will overwhelm the Home feed with tons of suggested crap and a few videos from your subscribed channels, instead of the other way around. You can click over to a subscription-only feed, but it’s not the default.
For me, the sickness started with forced introduction of the new interface. It was so horrible I just switched to old in the settings.
Imagine what happened? Reddit unchecked that setting for me every fucking month on purpose. Hole fuck this is disrespectful. Also, they replaced direct messages with chat that spams neverending crypto scams at me.
And on top of that majority of big subs are moderated by the same people with iron grip on “truth”
powermods, it was reported on another forum that there were 92 MODS that controlled 500+ subreddits. of course everone favorite"r/conservatives’ are controlled by actual russian backed people
I quit when they killed RiF. The Reddit app was unusable to me. I also exclusively used old interface on PC.
But Reddit downfall was fortuitous for me, I was doom scrolling way too much and it was having a toll on my mental health.
Lemmy is too slow moving for that. Theres only so many times I can scroll past the same SMCF post before I have to put the phone down, go outside and touch the grass
Praise the lard & all tha good things in life.
It will be a slow and painful death. I abandoned Reddit last year because enshittification. However, some great stuff from there lands here in Lemmy.and my search engine seems to like Reddit info. Not going back, but sentimental thoughts exist.
This is the straw that killed the cammels back for me. 15 year old account deleted.
