The democratic socialist Melat Kiros unseated the long-serving US representative Diana DeGette in Colorado’s primary elections held on Tuesday, the latest in a string of high-profile victories for the party’s insurgent left.

The Associated Press reported that Kiros had defeated DeGette for the Democratic nomination in the deep-blue first congressional district centered on Denver. Kiros’s triumph came a week after New York voters unseated two Democratic congressional incumbents and replaced a third who was retiring with candidates who had campaigned on standing up to Israel amid accusations that it was carrying out a genocide in Gaza.

This stuff has me hyped. I feel awful because Im from District 5 and didnt realize Reagan was the progressive desired candidate. Imo both Killin and Reagan ran weak platforms for my district.

All I heard from them is “im a veteran”.

On Killins website she had a goal of overturning Citizens United which peaked my interest in her. Reagan had no prominent language on his site with the same goal. I hope my district gets better DSA candidates in the future.

But im learning that she may just be another corporate democrat?

Diana DeGette was defeated by someone as old as her incumbency.

Love to see it. This is what should happen when you don’t pass the baton.

In a country where half the citizens are morons it will become increasingly more important for our candidates to focus on boots on the ground campaigning and leveraging heavily on social media. Our news outlets are so biased it’s borderline criminal what we allow them to get away with in the name of “journalism”

Some of the other people saying that were just out of hope, like me.

This example, and the other wins from the DSA, are giving me a bit of hope again.

The tankies are gonna be in shambles when the rest of us on the left prove that we can actually vote our way out of this mess. Shambles, I say!

Both sides are the same. Fascism, not fascism. Social empathy, sociopathy, it’s all the same.

Don’t vote. Don’t try to change anything. Why bother. Just wallow in propaganda, it’s easier.

15 term incumbency?!? Correct me if I’m wrong, but if each term is 4 years long, that makes 60 years, correct?

Why would anybody be in office that long?

They’re trying to make these people look radical, when their platforms are centrist stuff most other western nations have done for decades. Her platform is universal healthcare, universal pre-k, building homes, not funding wars in the Middle East, and not taking money from big corporations and billionaires.

      How is that radical?

In America, that is incredibly radical.

However, this is one of a string of incredible wins for the DSA, and I am very glad. As someone who has for a long time been despondent about electoral political change, it is a sign that the alternative - armed resistance and civil war - will not be necessary.

We should all support the DSA as much as we can if we do not want to see entire neighbourhoods on fire, civilians being slaughtered by the thousands, or all the other horrible shit that is inevitable in war.

Yeah, this is why so many of us have been saying stuff to the effect of “Wait till after midterms to see if democracy can prevail. If they cheat, or ignore the results, then all bets are off and anything goes. Until then, all is not yet lost, but if we resort to violence when there’s still hope of peace, all will be lost.”

There’s still hope in a peaceful way out of this. The fascists want us to believe there isn’t, but clearly they’re nervous about this election so apparently they haven’t rigged it as bad as they want us to think they have.

The people advocating for open revolt are not only jumping the gun, but they’re feeding right into the fascists’ plans. Some of them may even be fascists in disguise. Be very wary.

I don’t think that came across as intended. This is the Guardian, the US left is basically right in the UK.

I think what they mean is the Democratic Socialists are insurgent from the standpoint of a small group growning quickly. The negative connotation might not have been intended.
