very real chance the corporation raised the prices of the franchise ingerdients without raising the prices of the franchise menu items and this location’s owner had a relationship with the local ingredient distributor, ran the numbers, and figured they could sell enough burgers in the local community to make more money than they would keeping the random walk-ins who go into a burger king because they know what they’re getting.

Right, but that still doesn’t make sense. The only dictionary entry I’m finding for Fux is a variant of Fuchs, which means Fox, or colloquially a few other things unrelated to food like ‘fraternity pledge’. Fuck is Fick (n) / ficken (v) so it’s seemingly not that.

This doesn’t necessarily mean it’s a bad shop. Maybe being a franchise wasn’t helping their business, so they dropped it.

It might be better than BK, that wouldn’t be hard to do. BK is the worst of the major franchise burger shops, by far. I’ll eat at Arby’s before I eat at a BK.

(Their spicy mayo - sorry, “horseradish sauce” - is pretty good though)

And now you can completely avoid Arby’s and still get your Horsey Sauce fix: https://copykat.com/arbys-horsey-sauce/

I make a homemade version of the Arby’s Beef and Cheddar. Even bought a deli slicer just to get that piled-up effect. The Horsey Sauce recipe above nails it. The Arby Sauce however… I’ve yet to find a proper copycat recipe. I think there might be citrus (lime?) in Arby Sauce but it’s not listed in the ingredients.

Vevor 10 inch 240W. I’ve absolutely rail this thing, lent it out to my hunting Jedi buddy who also put the screws to it, lather, rinse, repeat for two years now. I used to have a meat-smoking and charcuterie business, so I have opinions about deli slicers. This unit (https://www.vevor.com/cutters-slicers-c_10662/vevor-commercial-meat-slicer-240w-electric-deli-food-slicer-10-inch-carbon-steel-blade-electric-food-slicer-350-400rpm-meat-slicer-0-0-47-inch-adjustable-thickness-for-commercial-and-home-use-p_010664867799) is categorically okay.

Cleaning it is okay, not tool-free; I taped the necessary Allen wrench to the bottom. Performance is absolutely acceptable. Maintaining it is pretty simple (sharpener is included). Motor is decent. Cheese slicing performance is decent. It tends to throw a lot of shreds, but I bet polishing the backside of the blade would fix that. Portability is the suck, but some long Velcro strips improve that. It’s no $3000 Hobart, but also costs one order of magnitude less.

It depends on the country I guess. Here in France I’d do a BK over McDonald’s any day. But it would loose to a Roadside (local burger chain) in most cases.

In the middle of the US all of the fast food chains are hit and miss depending on location. There are like 11 McDonald’s nearby and two of them are consistently good. There are at least three BKs and only one of them is consistently good.

When the BK is good I find it far better than McDonald’s. It is probably the fry grease they use and the open fire for cooking the meat, but also the vegetables and buns and everything else are just better imho. Good enough to get me to stop by a few times a year.

I remember the roast beef & cheddar being pretty good, especially with a coupon for 2 for $5 or something. Add some horsey sauce and they were quite good.

Fries were always hit and miss. Sometimes they had crispy curly fries, and sometimes they were soggy.

Are they the worst? IMO, they’re mid at worst. Some worse options:

      • Dairy Queen
      • Taco Bell - the one near me is actually decent since it’s in a nicer area, but I avoid them when traveling
      • McDonalds - I’ve been once in the last 20 years, and don’t plan to go again
      • KFC - in my area they’re partnered with A&W, which is also bad (was my favorite in the 90s, but they suck now)

I haven’t been to Burger King in years, so maybe they suck now. I remember them being decent, but nothing special.

I’m sure I’ll make it there at some point. I went to San Antonio a couple years ago, and we’ve discussed going to a beach there sometime.

DQ is high-quality in large parts of the Midwest as well. I can at least vouch for numerous locations across South Dakota and Minnesota.

Yeah, years ago. Compared to the options I have locally, it really sucks. Here in Utah, Culvers and Iceberg are way better, and even Arctic Circle (which sucks) is better.

At least Burger King is kinda unique in that they char-broil their burgers. Carl’s Jr does it better, but BK isn’t the worst option, at least the last time I went (which admittedly is a few years now).

I prefer my burgers to not be completely bone dry. There is a reason you grill burgers in indirect heat, and BKs entire gimmick is doing the opposite of that.

Same. I also prefer them to not be a pile of grease. Fast food will give you one of those two options, and sometimes I’d rather them be more dry than more greasy.

When I make them at home, they’re a nice mix of the two: not top greasy and not top dry. But sometimes a homade burger just isn’t in the cards, so I need to pick among the options I have.

I just wanna know what every restaurant does because I can not replicate any of their flavors while still making a “better” burger at home. Like, it tastes fine. Good even. But, like, McDonald’s burgers have this ungodly goodness that is inexplicable. I want that taste, but I don’t want the feeling of sickness that comes with it. 🤣

Here’s my guess as to what makes McDonald’s burgers special:

                  • high fat hamburger - 20-30%, maybe even 40%
                  • salt - way more than you think you need
                  • black pepper

That’s it. Make them thin and fry on a pan.

Their special sauce on the big mac is basically just relish, Italian dressing, onion powder, and mayo (maybe cut with Miracle Whip to make it taste more fake), maybe with a few other spices. I bet you could get close with trial and error on the ratios there.

The fries will be harder since they use a blend of oils and a deep frier, which most people won’t have.

Ingolstadt apparently. I couldn’t find the exact one, but there appears to be only 2 burger kings in the city, and I suspect it’s this one (warning: google streetview)

God what a beautiful city Ingolstadt looks like from above though, with the Danube flowing through it, and the old city having an actual green belt around it

    Edit: @zout@fedia.io found it here!

Fun fact in case you didn’t know, the green belt you are referring to is the leftover area of what was once the city wall. You can still kinda see it in the star like shape of the green belt and there are a few old fortifications left for sightseeing.

I was thinking about trying Jack-in-the-Box for the first time so I downloaded the app, and my local joint wasn’t listed. Did some digging and they were apparently delisted because their google reviews were truly awful. Exclusively one stars for the last year. Stuff like “person in the drive through window tried to climb out of the window like the girl from The Ring and fight me” and “the chicken was still straight up frozen, like directly from the freezer not a little cold in the middle”. I thought they always had a long line because it was good, but it turns out people get stuck in that line for an hour and can’t get out.
